Jefferson served in the Black Hawk War of 1831-1832. In April of 1832 he was on the muster roll of Captain Levi W. Goodan's Company of the Brigade of Mounted Volunteers, commanded by Brigadier General Samuel Whitesides. They were mustered into service at Beardstown, Illinois. Jefferson is also listed on the muster roll of Captain Elijah Iles' Company of Mounted Volunteers under the command of Brigadier General Atkinson. On the muster roll, Jefferson gives his residence as Sangamon County, Illinois where he lived for a very short time. It is also noted that he had no horse. He was discharged on May 28, 1832 at the mouth of the Fox River, about 175 miles away from home. In 1894, Adella made a pension claim based on this service.
The Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database lists a number of purchases in McDonough County for Jefferson or Jefferson A. Welch. All purchases were in section 2, township 6N, range 4W. A total of 200 acres was purchased for $1.25 per acre. Purchases were made on October 28, 1835; March 8, 1848; September 8, 1848 and December 22, 1849.
The Macomb newspaper noted in the February 22, 1883 issue that Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Welch, living 3 miles north of Colchester celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Jefferson was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
