Note: George Washington Welch was better known as G.W. or Washington. He first appeared on the tax list of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky in 1828. In April 1832 he buys 100 acres on Cypress Creek (his father's land) in Muhlenberg County for $150. He did not live there very long because he is in McDonough County, Illinois by 1835.
The Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database lists 2 purchases in McDonough County, Illinois for George W. Welch. Both purchases were made on June 18, 1835. One purchase was described as E2NW, section 1, township 5N, range 4W for a total of 69.50 acres. The other purchase was in W2NW, section 1, township 5N, range 4W, also for 69.50 acres. The price per acre was $1.25.
On September 7, 1836, Washington Welch sold to William Sketoe, both of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky for $300, 100 acres on Cypress Creek, formerly owned by Ozias Welch, deceased.
Washington gave liberally to the building fund of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Hire township and organized the first Sabbath school there in the spring of 1855 and served as superintendent for several years. He served as one of the ruling elders until his death.
Both Washington and his wife Mary are buried in Argyle Cemetery which is located about 2 miles NW of Colchester in McDonough County. In his will, Washington left his daughter, Emma, 120 acres he owned in Henry County, Missouri. He also provided for her a "good English education."
