Biography

Richard Welles, Knt., 7th Lord Welles, of Belleau, Lincolnshire, Privy Councillor, and, in right of his 1st wife, Lord Willoughby of Eresy, also in right of his 1st wife, of Willoughby le Marsh, Boston, Frampton, and Kirton, Lincoln, and Edgefield, Norfolk[1]

Parents: Richard was son and heir of Lionel Welles, K.G., by Joan Waterton, daughter of Robert Watrton, Esq., by Cecily, daughter of Sir Robert Fleming[1]
born about 1428-30[1] at Welle, Lincolnshire, England[2]
Wives:
(1) Joan Willoughby, daughter of Sir Robert Willoughby by his first wife Elizabeth Montagu[1] (born c1425, died circa 13 Feb 1462[2])
married probably before 1446, certainly before 9 Jan. 1448/9[1]
(2) Margery Strangeways, widow of John Ingleby (no issue)[1] (born c1435[2])
married by license dated August 10, 1468[1]
Children
Richard and Joan had two children:
  • Sir Robert Welles (died March 19, 1469/70), married Elizabeth Bourgchier[1]
  • Joan Welles, married Sir Richard Hastings[1]

Sir Richard Welles was executed March 12, 1469/70.[1]

Treason

Sir Richard and his son Sir Robert "became involved in the schemes of Warwick and Clarence against King Edward IV. Being summoned to London, he obtained a royal pardon 3 March 1469/70, but was kept under restrainst while the king marched North against his son."[1]
Sir Richard was "beheaded by the king's order at Queen's Cross, Stamford, Lincolnshire" after his son refused to lay down his arms. His son's forces had been defeated by the king on March 12, 1469/70 at Empingham. Sir Robert wa captured March 14 or 15 and was beheaded at Doncaster on March 19, 1469/70.[1]

update: done/merge with Welles-232 completed

Again - not a son of Maud de Ros & John de Welle. Lionel Welles had a son Richard born about 1428-30 according to Richardson's Royal Ancestry - I think the best bet is to edit this profile (to be born c1430 & remove parents) then merge him with Welles-232.
