Thomas Wellman was born in England; and is estimated to have arrived in Lynn, Massachusetts, about 1640. The surname of his wife, Elizabeth, is uncertain; but from the presumed birth dates of his sons Abraham (1643) and Isaac (1647) their marriage is estimated as 1642.
1634, Feb. 17. Thomas Wellman, Age 21, in the ship Hopewell, from the Port of London to Barbadoes.[1]
The first record of presence in Lynn is sale of property to Thomas and his brother-in-law John Knight in 1653. The two men worked together to clear a farm until Thomas purchased his brother-in-law's share in 1662. Thomas had three more daughters Elizabeth born in 1660, Sarah born in 1662, and Mary born in 1664 before his death in 1672.
Their home on the east side of Summer Street in Lynn was occupied by several generations of Wellmans before being demolished in the 1830's.
