Jacob was the son of Virginians Samuel & Elizabeth Slimp/Slemp Wells. According to the 1850 census, Jacob was born in Tenn. He and his wife were early settlers from Keene, Kentucky to Owen Township in Jackson County, IN ca. 1816/17. He may well have traveled with Owen Township's original settler David Kindred. David Kindred is shown in the township history as the first full time settler in Dec. 1816. Jacob married Sarah Carothers in Jessamine County, KY. ca. 1818. His sister, Sarah Wells, married his wife's brother, James Carothers, & they lived for a time in close proximity in Ky. His brother, Thornton, is buried on the old Kentucky home place.

Once settled in Owen Township, Jacob farmed and built a horse-run log mill in the early 1820s. As a respected farmer in the township he was elected in 1831 a county commissioner to serve for three years. He also served as a Justice of the Peace. He and his wife were Baptists. In the last year of his life his assets are recorded in the Federal census as being valued as $3,200.00.

According to family accounts he served in the War of 1812 against the British & Indian Chief Tecumseh. (In the book "A History of Jessamine County, Ky." there is a letter written by a John Netherland in Oct 1813. In that letter Private Jacob Wells is found on a list of soldiers who were enlisted from the Keene area under the command of 4th Company's Capt. Mason Singleton in Col. George Trotter's Reg. They participated in the decisive Battle of the Thames in Canada.). (Bio by Jim Hutcheson)
