THOMAS WELLS, b. 1672; d. August 26, 1737; m. first Sarah Browne at Newbury, Mass., 1696; moved to Wells, and was admitted to the church, December 14, 1701.
The following is quoted in the Genealogy of the Wells Family, of Wells, Maine p 14-15, which takes the account from Massachusetts Historical Collections, Vol. 3, "Topographical Account of Wells", by Judge Wells.
"At the commencement of the next war (August 10, 1703), and on the day it began, the Indians burnt the dwelling-house of Mr. Thomas Wells, killed his wife, and all his children, he being absent from home . At the same time the Indians killed Mr. Sayer and his family, who lived in the next house, with sundry other persons ..."
Soon after the murder of his family, Thomas Wells returned to Newbury, and resided there for some years. He m. 2d, widow of Abraham Gale - Mrs. Lydia (Ropes) Gale, October 12, 1704, Salem, Mass. (See Ropes Family #11, p. 300. ) Thomas Wells was chosen Deacon of the Church at Wells, Me., March 3, 1718.
His first three children killed Aug 10, 1703 were Sarah, Joshua, and a newborn. He had 3 children of his second marriage: Nathaniel, Joshua, and Lydia. He died August 26, 1737. [1]
