The marriage record recorded in Scott County, Iowa shows that George M. Barrette married Mattie E. Wells on May 25, 1880. It gives her age as 18, meaning that she was born in either 1861 or 1862.[1] However, the 1880 US Census shows two Matties:
If both these records are true, then Mattie, who had only been married for a few days, got caught twice by the census taker. George and Mattie had a place of their own in Rock Island, and Mattie was visiting her mother and stepfather in Davenport, right across the river, five days later. If Mattie's mother was Martha Hall, born in Vermont, and Martha had previously been married to a man named Wells, then this would explain what Mattie was doing in Davenport on June 8.
Most likely Mattie was about 24 or 25 when she was married, not 18, but there is no proof of this except for several census records and her death record.
In 1900 Mattie and George are living in Davenport with three children: Lydia, 19, Ada, 18, and George, one.[4]
The death record for Mattie Wells Barrette, dated July 13, 1928 gives more information about Mattie. She died in Springfield, Illinois, but was buried in Davenport, Iowa. She was born in Woodstock, Vermont on May 18, 1855. Her father's name was Alva Wells and her mother's name was Martha Daly.[5]
