Peter was born in 1842 to Matthew Hedges Wells and Hannah M Watts. The 1850 Census shows his father, Matthew, alone in California,[1] and it seems Matthew's wife and children followed him out. The 1850 Census[2] also shows Matthew with his wife and daughter, but doesn't list Peter, so it's unclear where Peter was or if it was a simple omission on the census taker's part. The 1860 Census shows Peter at Sutter Creek. Peter passed away in 1884 when he was murdered by his brother-in-law, Uzza French.
