Biography

Thomas Wells, Jr was born in 1723 in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut, son of Thomas Welles and Elizabeth Merrill.[1]

He married first Thankful Rowley (1723–1750) in 1743 in Hebron, Connecticutt[2] and they had four children.[1]

He married second Prudence Shipman (1728–1795) in 1750 in Hebron, Connecticut[3] and they had the following known children[1]:

  1. Thankful Wells
  2. Prudence Wells
  3. Elihu Wells
  4. Russell Wells
  5. Thomas Welles 3rd
  6. Reuben Wells
  7. Shipman Wells[4]
  8. William Augustus Wells
  9. Elisabeth Wells

He died 1 Sep 1805 Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut and was buried there in Godfrey Hill Cemetery.[5]

His will mentioned both wives and all children except Thomas, b. 11 Feb 1743/4 who probably died young.

Research Notes

There is a conflict in date of birth of Thomas Jr:

  • 7 Sep 1723 in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut
  • 27 Aug 1723 in Saybrook, Middlesex, Connecticut[5]

Note that the 2nd Thomas attributed as a child for Thomas Wells jr and Prudence under Shipman's memorial (133368443) on Find A Grave and to Thankful under his own memorial (37385018) actually belongs to neither. This Thomas is said to have been born in 1748, the same year Thankful's Bateman was born and before Thomas married Prudence. Thus, it is an error on Find A Grave, and Thomas (8 Nov 1748–2 Jul 1826) is thus not a son of Thomas Wells jr.

Wells-8944 and Welles-489 appear to represent the same person because: same name and death dates , same birth year, merge away unconnected profile
