Biography

Of the children of John Wentworth, but three daughters are found (of whom nothing is known prior to their marriage), and four sons; but little as to the order of their birth. (All the descendants of John whose marriages were recorded up to 1 March 1753, were married by Rev. Samuel Dunbar, of Stoughton; after that date by Rev. Jedediah Adams, of Stoughton) These children were:

19. John, died at Stoughton, 6 January 1772, aged 95. This makes him born about 1676, and he is undoubtedly the first-born.

21. Charles, died at Canton, Mass, 8 July 1780, aged 96m and was therefore born about 1684.

23. Elizabeth, married, 16 May 1728, John Kenney

24a. Mary, married, in Boston, Mass, 24 September 1712, James Wright, of that place, where he died 24 July 1725, aged 51; his widow was appointed administratrix, 6 August following. John, when he gave power of attorney to son John, was of Boston, and James Wright was a witness. The had:

Charles (21), son of John and Martha Wentworth, born in or about 1684. He lived in Canton, Mass., then a part of Stoughton, which was, until 1726, included in Dorchester. The house in which he lived is still standing, and is next door to that of his descendant Abel (1157) (who died in 1863), of Canton, lived. Forty acres of land in the "West precinct of Dorchester" (now Canton), was deeded to Charles, 1 January, 1710 for £9, lawful money, -- bounded on one side by land which three persons hired of the Indians in 1695. He also purchased lands of the Indians as by p. 102, book XL, Boston records, and in the same manner as his brother John (19), whom see.

Charles was one of the Selectmen of Stoughton, in 1730, and for several years afterwards. When sixty years of age, he was appointed by Gov. William Shirley, 18 June, 1744, lieutenant of the 3d company of the 4th regiment of militia; on the promotion of Capt. John Shepherd, in 1746, Charles became captain.

He died at Canton, Mass,. 8 July 1780, aged 96. John Kenney, of Stoughton, was appointed administrator. His inventory was returned at £8,954 9s. 4½d. He once held slaves.

In his will, dated 19 May, 1780 he made bequests to the following persons, viz: to Amariah, oldest son and his wife Sarah, (probably a second wife,) a double portion; to Jerusha, widow of son William, and their son John; to son Samuel, land near Mount Hungar, to daughters, Rachel Atherton, Bethiah Gill and Jerusha Capen, to granddaughter Bethiah, daughter of Samuel (she had "the old white-faced cow"); and to grandsons Samuel, Jr., Nathaniel, Abel and John, sons of Samuel.

Charles married at Dorchester, 15 December 1713, Bethiah, daughter of John Fenno, of Stoughton. She died 29 April, 1780, aged 89. (John Fenno was dead as early as 7 January, 1745. He had, also, Ruth, who married Eliphalet Leonard. [Joseph Fenno and John Fenno (who married Jerusha (126) Wentworth) were his sons.)

121. Rachel, born 13 March, 1714-15; married, in 26 January 1741, John Atherton of Stoughton, Mass., born 14 May 1714, son of Humphrey, grandson of Consider and great-grandson of Major-General Humphrey Atherton, the emigrant. He died at Stoughton, 4 October 1785; she died 11 August 1798. They had:
1. Elizabeth Atherton, born 20 May 1744; married ---- Tucker, of Milton, Mass., and had:

2. John Atherton, born 21 July 1747; married Mary Adams, second cousin of President John Adams, born 21 February 1751. He died at Stoughton, Mass., 3 July 1825; she died 24 June 1843. The had:
1. John Atherton, born 2 December 1769; married 9 February 1797, Sally Bird. He died in Savannah, Ga. 21 September 1824; she died in Taunton, Mass., 6 April 1818, They had eight children.
2. Jedediah Atherton, born 3 March 1772; married, 1st Hannah Drake, of Sharon, Mass., and had two children who died in infancy; 2d 14 April 1805 Sarah Bradley. He died 17 January 1824
3. Humphrey Atherton, born 20 January 1774, died 31 August 1778.
4. Mary Atherton, born 21 March 1776, died 20 August 1778
5. Rachel Atherton, born 3 May 1778; married Abraham Capon, and had one child who died young. She died 26 February 1798.
6. Elijah Atherton, born 25 July 1780; married 1st 19 April 1803, Ruth Tisdale, who died 18 June 1824, aged 39, having six children; 2nd Harriett, daughter of Gen. Elijah Crane, and widow of Col. Bethuel Drake of Canton, Mass; she died 1 May 1830, having two children; 3d, 10 July 1831, Laura Gilmore, who died 20 April 1856, having had three children, who died in infancy. In 1844, Elijah Atherton was in possession of land in Stoughton, Mass, whose title descended in an unbroken line from Major-General Humphrey Atherton, the emigrant. He died at Stoughton, 13 December 1852.
7. Samuel Atherton, born 19 September 1784; married Abigail Pope, of Stoughton, Mass., born 5 December 1785; she died 19 March 1868. They had six children.
8. Mary Atherton, born 1 December 1786; married, 29 May 1810, Abiezer Packard; she died 17 June 1840, having three children
9. Nathan Atherton, born 25 October 1788; married, 6 July 1823, Amity Merton; she died 17 October 1858, having had four children.

124. Bethiah, married, at Stoughton, Mass., 9 January, 1752, to Col. Benjamin Gill. He was for several years one of the selectmen of Stoughton, and was deacon in the church of which Rev. Samuel Dunbar was pastor. He commanded a regiment at the capture of Burgoyne. He died 23 April 1807; she died 22 March 1817. They had:
1. Elijah Gill, born October 1752; was deacon; married Abigail Fischer. He died 29 May 1826.
2. Rebecca Gill, born October 1755; married 1st, Abijah Upham; 2d, Joshua Wales; and died October 1815
3. Bethiah Gill, born March 1758; married Daniel Tucker, and died 15 January 1844
4. Benjamin Gill, born May 1760l married Content (Porter), widow of William Glover, and died 17 October 1824
5.Sarah Gill, born January 1767, died 8 April 1816
6. Nathan Gill, born September 1764; was Colonel; married Abigail Crane, and died 19 March 1823
7. Sarah Gill, born 1767, died 8 April 1816
8. Polly Gill, born May 1769; married John Howard and died 21 March 1846
9. John Gill, born March 1772; married Polly Wilkington, and died 19 April 1816

126. Jerusha, born 4 June, 1734; married, 1st at Stoughton, 14 December, 1752, her maternal cousin John Fenno, Jr, son of John Fenno, brother of her mother, the wife of Charles (21); 2nd, 25 December 1771, Nathaniel Leonard; and 3d, Ebenezer Capen. She had by her first marriage:
1. Charles Fenno, married widow Lydia (Tucker) Babcock, and died 6 January 1824. She died 22 January 1830, aged 81.
