Biography

Most of the information about Mary Elizabeth is family folklore, propagated through many online, unsourced family trees and probably romanticized. Among the stories for which there is no documentation:

  • she was descended from British royalty;
  • she was rescued from a hostile tribe by a Chief Donahoo (for whose existence is also doubtful), who fell in love with her and married her;
  • she died in childbirth (unlikely if birth and death dates are somewhat correct!).

If Mary Elizabeth existed, it was much earlier. She was not the mother of Elizabeth Pledge Poindexter or her mother Ann Redmond. There is no evidence that either she, or "Chief Donahoo" ever existed.
