Alice was may have been born in about 1595. This is a guess which assumes she was about 20 when her eldest child was born. Her last name at birth and parents are currently unknown (see Research Notes).
Alice married Francis Constable, probably soon after he completed his apprenticeship in July 1614. Their eldest child was baptised in September 1615.
Her marriage to a member of the Stationers' Company may provide a clue to Alice's origins, as it was common for men to marry a daughter of another member of the Company.
Alice had fifteen children in just sixteen years, all with Francis (see baptism/burial records on relevant child's profile):
Alice Constable died on 4 August 1647, just three days after her husband. Son Robert died later that month. All three died of the plague.[1]
Alice's exact date of death is inferred from the fact that on 4 August 1647 she was granted Administration of her husband's estate. Alice would have been too ill to attend court, appointing one John Allen (probably the stationer of this name) to represent her.[2] But she must have still been alive (at least when proceedings commenced), as the Court would not have granted Administration to a deceased person. Also on 4 August 1647, Alice Constable's burial is recorded in the register of St Margaret's, Westminster.[1] Burial the same day as death was not unusual during epidemics of the plague.
Before she died, Alice made her will, which was proved before the Peculiar Court of the Dean and Chapter of Westminster on 22 September 1647. Her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Anthony Savage, as well as unmarried daughters Mary, Frances and Rachel, all appeared before the court.[1]
On 17 February 1647/8, Richard Thale registered rights to 20 works that he had purchased from the Administrators of the estate of Alice Constable, which had previously belonged to Francis Constable. The entry lists the Administrators as being Anthony Savage, Mary, Frances and Rachel Constable.[3]
Very little is proven about the wife of Francis Constable. Trees on the internet show her maiden name as Wentworth, which is due to confusion with Alice Wentworth that married Robert Constable a century earlier. The last name of Owen is also found with no explanation of its origin.
Things are further confused by a totally unsourced Find a Grave Memorial that indicates:[4]
Alice Owen was born in 1595 in City of London, Greater London, England. She passed away on 4 Aug 1647 in City of Westminster, Greater London, England and was buried at St Margaret Churchyard, Westminster, City of Westminster, Greater London, England.
Dr Mark Bland has identified Alice, wife of Francis Constable, as being the daughter of Simon Waterson, Stationer. He advises that his forthcoming book, "The World of Simon Waterson, Stationer", will provide the evidence of this connection.[5] Donnelly-2171 08:09, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

This is the only record for an Alice Owen born to a Richard Owen in England during the time cited. This would make her too old to be the wife and mother of the Constable family.

If there are no sources, her last name should be changed to Unknown.
