Biography

This profile represents the wife of William Woodard.

Nothing is known of the wife of William Woodard. William is only known from court and land records regarding his property, which do not name his wife.[1]

William and his wife were the parents of at least two children:

  1. Martha (who married 1. Gideon Macon; 2. Nathaniel West; 3. _______ Biggers)
  2. Anne (who married Thomas Spencer).[2]

The wife of William Woodward is said to have died 18 Dec 1700 in St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Middlesex, England.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Disputed Parents

There are internet family trees claiming that the wife of William Woodward was a) named Martha, and/or b) a daughter of Governor Thomas West of Virginia and his wife Cicely Shirley. There is no known evidence to support this. Douglas Richardson does not recognize that Thomas West had a daughter Martha.[3]

Mrs. Woodward may have been Martha West, a descendant of Lord Delaware, whether or not she was Martha West, this great-grandmother was almost certainly Virginia born. [4]

The following Wikipedia page states Thomas West had a daughter Martha who married Woodward the interpreter. However, Wikipedia has labelled the source used for that information as an unreliable source. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_West,_3rd_Baron_De_La_Warr. This information being on Wikipedia may lead to future duplicates on WikiTree.

I proposed a merge. Can someone like and tell me what you think.

Teresa, it looks like you rejected a merge, not proposed one. That said, the rejected merge appears correct; they were mother and daughter.

And as long as we're here, it appears this profile's LNAB should be "Unknown" given what's in the narrative. I'll need to ask a Leader/Team member to fix that due to project protection.

West-4971 and West-2097 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband, similar dates.

West-17373 and West-2097 appear to represent the same person because: The difference in death date needs to be researched, but these are intended to be the same person.

West-8309 and West-2097 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly meant to be the same woman, although no documentation for her name exists.

If Martha existed and was the daughter of Governor West, how could she have been born in Virginia? He left Virginia in 1611 and never returned.

I currently believe that Thomas West was the father of Martha West, but the mother is the question. Martha West was baptized on June 13, 1613, with a father named Thoma (the ink fades out). That is from Church of England records. She was baptized about 58 miles from where Thomas West was born. The story of Thomas West as her father had to start somewhere, and I believe it was what the people knew at the time. It is hard for me to believe that it was made up. I can't understand why anyone would make it up. Please let me know if I am in error. I consider her baptism as known evidence.

Yes Vicki, I think it's a good idea to leave Martha's name as it is, if only because the general assumption about her name is very much "out there." Her alleged parents have links at the beginning of her bio, so they can easily be re-attached in the data fields if any evidence comes to light.

Even though we are unsure if Williams' wife's name was Martha West, can we leave her attached to William? Added a note about this to her bio.
Hello, I've added a "disputed parents" paragraph for Martha West. If nobody objects, I'll go ahead and detach her parents. If you have evidence that Martha was daughter of Governor Thomas West, then please share it, thanks!
