Biography

The Pamunkey man known as "John West" was the son of Cockacoeske, referred to as the "Queen of the Pamunkey," He was born after the death of her husband, Totopotamoi, and is widely believed to be the son of Colonel John West The child became known as John West (of this profile), but it's unclear whether he was named after his father or was called that because his father was an admired person.

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that John's father left Unity Croshaw for Cockacoeske. But John's age suggests he was born prior to his father's marriage to Unity.

“John West” was reported to be twenty years old when he and his mother met with the Governor’s Council in June, 1676. A man named Thomas Matthews wrote down his recollection of the event in 1705, saying "Our committee being sat, the Queen of Pamunkey … was introduced... bringing on her right hand an Englishman Interpreter and on the left her Son a Stripling twenty years of age.… [The interpreter] told us she bid him ask her Son to whom the English tongue was familiar, and who was reputed the son of an English Colonel, yet neither woud he speak or seem to understand.... " [1]

Along with his mother he signed his mark to the 1677 Virginia/Indian Treaty of Middle Plantation, recorded as "The Signe of Cap't John West, sonne to the Queen of Pomunkey." [2]

John was married to a Pamunkey woman. In 1678 Cockacoeske and her son filed a list of grievances with the colonial authorities. Among the grievances was a complaint that John West’s wife had run away and was being harbored by the Chickahominy, since she “had been bred and born at Chickahominy although her parents were Pamunkeys.” [3]

"On July 1, 1686, the Pamunkeys’ interpreter, George Smith, informed the governor that the Pamunkey queen “was lately dead and that ye Pamunkey Indians did desire that ye late Queen’s niece . . . upon [whom] ye right of Government of that Indian nation doe devolve, might succeed.”[4] John West was apparently still alive when his mother died, but leadership of the Pamunkey was matrilineal. He appears in no further records.

Different John West; there were at least three men by this name in Virginia at this time. "John West" who was the son of Cockacoeske had a Pamunkey wife (who left him) and no known children. The one married to Susannah Pearson lived in Stafford County he is: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/West-7356

On behalf of the Native American Project we propose to create a new bio for this man, the Pamunkey John West. Since this bio includes information for at least two different John Wests, I will move the text of the current profile to a free space page, then create a new bio with only documented information related to the son of Cockacoeske. Much of the information in the current bio applies to a different John West who apparently died in 1716, not to the Pamunkey man who vanishes from records after 1686.

West-2403 and West-1341 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure where the name Josiah came from, but these two profiles, as they currently exist, appear to represent the same person.

It looks like this John West and West-2403 are meant to be the same man. Can we get them merged and cleaned up? The documented facts are that he was born about 1656, mother Cockacoeske, father believed to be Col. John West who married Unity Croshaw. Was married to a Pamunkey woman, who had left him by 1676. Was apparently alive in 1686 when his mother died. No other records are found, everything else seems to be Internet speculation and myth.

I don’t find any mention of ‘Josiah’ as Cockecoeske’s son, just ‘John’. Is this a different person or just a wrong name?

If this man is the son of Cockecoeske he was born about 1756 and cannot be the father of a man born in 1738. Does anyone have clarification?

Indian-14 and West-2403 appear to represent the same person because: same person, we will add alt date of birth info to the bio.

Wikipedia and other quasi-credible sources only mention the existence of one child of John West and Powhatan. There is no source tof support the existence of a second child. I believe that this merge should be reinstated.

Indian-14 and West-1341 do not represent the same person because: Date of death different. Probably a link for a different brother.
