Biography

Thomas West, K.G., K.B., 8th Lord la Warre, 5th Lord West, born about 1457 (aged 19 in 1476), was son and heir of Richard West, Knt., 7th Lord la Warre, 4th Lord West, by his wife, Katherine Hungerford.[1][2][3]

Lands and Barony

Following the death of his father on 10 March 1475/6, Thomas received special livery of his lands on 1 September 1476, although he was still a minor.[1][3] He was summoned to Parliament from 15 November 1482 to 15 April 1523.[1][3]
Thomas supported Henry VII and in 1485/6, was given large grants from estates Sussex of the attainted Duke of Norfolk.[3] In 1514 he served as Lord Attendant on Princess Mary Tudor,[1] the King's sister, at her marriage to Louis XII of France.[3] In 1520, Thomas was one of the King's attendants at the Field of the Cloth of Gold.[1]

Military Service

Thomas served in the expedition to France in 1474.[1][3] He was one of the chief commanders sent to Flanders in 1491[3] to aid Emperor Maximilian against the French.[1] In 1496/7 he commanded the forces raised to repress the rebellion in Cornwall.[1][3] In 1513, he was part of the Battle of Spurs,[1] participating in the sieges of Therouenne and Tournay.[3]

Knighthood

Thomas was knighted by the King 18 January 1477/8.[3] He was made a Knight of the Bath when Arthur Tudor was created Prince of Wales in 1489.[1] He was nominated to the Order of the Garter 23 April 1510, and his investiture took place 11 May 1510.[3] Thomas was made a Knight Banneret at the Battle of the Spurs in 1513.[1][3]

Marriages and Children

Thomas married first Eleanor Percy, daughter of Henry Percy, Knt., 3rd Earl of Northumberland, 6th Lord Percy, by Eleanor Poynings. Thomas and Eleanor had no issue.[1][4] This marriage is not shown in Complete Peerage.
Thomas married second, before 1482 (when his eldest son was born), Elizabeth Mortimer, daughter of Hugh Mortimer, Knt., by Eleanor Cornwall.[1][3][4] Thomas and Elizabeth had five sons and six daughters:
  • Thomas, K.G., K.B., 9th Lord la Warre, 6th Lord West, born about 1482, died 25 September 1554, married Elizabeth Bonville, they had no issue.[1] Upon his death, the baronies of West and la Warre both fell into abeyance.[5][6]

  • Anthony[1]
  • Richard[1]

  • Joan[1]
Elizabeth died 29 June 1502.[1][4]
Thomas married third Eleanor Copley, daughter of Roger Copley, Esq.,[4] by Anne Hoo.[1][3] (Douglas Richardson corrects Complete Peerage, by updating Roger Copley to Esquire, after Cokayne described him as Sir Roger Copley). Thomas and Eleanor had three sons and four daughters:
  • Owen, Knt., married Mary Guildford[1]
  • George, Knt., died in September 1538, married Elizabeth Morton and had issue[1]

Sir Thomas West died 11 October 1525[4] and was buried in the chauncel of the church at Broadwater, Sussex. His will dated 8 October 1524 or 1525 was proved 12 February 1525/6[1] at the Church of St. Paul, London.[3] His Inquisition Post Mortem states that Thomas died at Offyngton, Sussex and his next heir was his son, Thomas.[4] Thomas' widow Eleanor died before 14 November 1536[3] and was buried with Thomas.[1]

If you do not know the birth date of an individual you can make an estimate based on other family members. A persons birth is usually 19 to 20 years before their marriage and or first children. In this case, this is a pre-1500 profile and should not have been created without the appropriate badge. Please see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1500_Profiles

Is it just me, or are we missing Thomas West, 9th Baron De La Warr 6th Baron West, KG (c. 1475 – 25 September 1554), eldest son of Thomas West, 8th Baron De La Warr, by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Mortimer (daughter of Sir Hugh Mortimer of Martley and Kyre Wyard, Worcestershire, by Eleanor Cornwall, daughter of Sir Edmund Cornwall)? I see him mentioned in the list of children, but at least some summary detail could be added, along with his marriage to Elizabeth Bonville, and that with their childless marriage, the baronies of West and De La Warr both fell into abeyance.
