Biography

Reynold West, Knt., 6th Lord la Warre, 3rd Lord West, born 5 (or 7) September 1395 (aged 21 or 22 in 1416), was the second son of Thomas West, Knt., 1st Lord West, and Joan la Warre,^[1][2] who was "sister of the half blood to the last two Lords" and the only daughter of Roger La Warre, 3rd Lord la Warre, to leave issue.^[3]

Sir Reynold held the following manors and estates:^[1]

• Allington and Newton Tony, Wiltshire
• Oakhanger, Newton Valence and Winkton, Hampshire
• Compton Valence and Hinton Martell, Dorset
• Brislington, Somerset, etc.

• Captain of St. Lo Castle in Normandy,^[1] March 1417/8 and April 1421^[3]
• Captain of La Motte Fort,^[1] 5 December 1419^[3]
• Justice of the Peace for Sussex, 1435^[1]

Life

Reynold was heir to his older brother, Thomas West, Knt., 2nd Lord West in 1416.^[1] The king took his homage and he had livery of his brother's lands on 22 November 1416. By that date, Reynold was a knight. He was in the wars in France 1417-1422.^[3]

In 1427, he was heir to his uncle, [Master] Thomas la Warre, 5th Lord la Warre;^[1] the King taking his fealty 21 June 1427 after which he was given livery of his uncle's lands.^[3] Reynold was summoned to Parliament as Lord la Warre from 15 July 1427 to 3 August 1429, by writs directed Reginaldo la Warre and as Lord West from 25 February 1431/2 to 23 September 1449, by writs directed Reginaldo West.^[1][3] In October 1427, he petitioned the Crown that he might sit in Parliament with the precedence of his la Warre ancestors.^[3]

In 1430 and 1431, Reynold was in France with the King.^[3] In 1446, Reynold had license to travel to Rome and then on to the Holy Land to pay his vows.^[1][3] He was later an honorary member of the Merchant Taylors' Guild of London.^[1]

Marriage

Sir Reynold married first, before 17 February 1428/9, Margaret Thorley, daughter of Robert Thorley, Esq., by his first wife Anne de la Pole.^[1][2][3] They had two sons and five daughters:

• Richard, Knt., 7th Lord la Warre, 4th Lord West, born about 28 October 1430, died 10 March 1475/6, married Katherine Hungerford and had issue^[1][2][3]
• Roger^[1][2]
• Anne, married Maurice Berkeley, Knt, of Beverstone, Gloucestershire^[1][2]
• Margaret, married Thomas Echingham, Knt., of Etchingham, Sussex^[1][2]
• Elizabeth, married William Berkeley, K.B., Viscount Berkeley, Earl of Nottingham, Earl Marshall, Marquess of Berkeley^[1][2]
• Mary, married Roger Lewknor, Knt., of Broadhurst, Sussex, etc.^[1][2]
• Katherine, wife of Roger Hungerford^[1][2]

Margaret died before 24 November 1433.^[1][2][3]

Sir Reynold married second, before 19 November 1443, Elizabeth Greyndour, daughter and heiress of Robert Greyndour, Esq., by Joan Rugge (or Rigge).^[1][2][3] They had no issue.^[1][2]

Death

Sir Reynold West died 27 August 1450^[3] and was buried at Broadwater, Sussex.^[1] His widow, Elizabeth remarried to John Tiptoft, K.G., 1st Earl of Worcester,^[3] 2nd Lord Toptoft, with whom she had a son, John.^[1] Elizabeth died 1 September 1452^[3] in childbirth.^[1]
