Biography

Samuel (Sgt) West (23 AUG 1743 Lebanon Township, New London, Connecticut[1]- 10 JANUARY 1835 Columbia, Tolland, Connecticut) is believed to be the son of Nathan West (8 AUG 1711 Duxberry, Plymouth County, Massachusetts - 16 JUL 1791 New Hampshire) and his second wife Jerusha Hinckley (bp. 29 DEC 1720 Lebanon, Connecticut - ).


On 12 Sep 1765 in Lebanon, Connecticut, Samuel married Sarah Hunt[2].

Sarah Lynna Hunt was born 11 July and baptized on 12 July 1747 in Lebanon, Connecticut the daughter of Jonathan Hunt and Ruth Cushman[3] and died 12 August 1816 in Columbia County, New York[4].

The couple lived in New Milford, Litchfield, Connecticut as recorded in the 1810 and 1820 census and then in Columbia, Tolland, Connecticut in 1830 where he died in 1835.

Samuel West is listed in the Sons of the American Revolution records. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and listed as a pensioner on 5 Aug 1833 while living in Tolland, Connecticut.

Children include:

  1. Joel (Reverend) West born 12 Mar 1766 Lebanon, Connecticut[5] died 25 Oct 1826 in East Hampton, Middlesex, CT, married Elizabeth Brockway (1774-1853) and lived in Middlesex County, CT. Two children have been documented.
  2. Sarah West b. 11 Jun 1768 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut, married George Pease b. about 1765
  3. Parthena West (15 May 1770 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut - 1859 Smyrna, Chenango, New York) married Jared Bennett (1764 New London, Connecticut Colony - 28 April 1845 Smyrna, Chenango, New York)
  4. Vilatia born 2 May 1772 in Lebanon, CT and died 25 Sept 1849 in Columbia, Tolland, CT buried in the Old Yard Cemetery in Columbia. Married Gilbert Lincoln (1771 Taunton, MA - 17 Jun 1844) and lived in Columbia, Tolland, CT. Two children have been documented.
  5. Submit West (26 Dec 1773 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut - 31 Mar 1846 Andover, Tolland, Connecticut) married Deacon Benjamin House (about 1752 Hebron, Tolland , Connecticut - 5 Sep 1841 Connecticut.
  6. Col. Samuel West Jr (11 Feb 1776 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut - 16 Oct 1863 Connecticut) married Rebecca Little (14 MAR 1775 Hebron, Tolland, Connecticut - 8 May 1821 Connecticut)
  7. Charles West (11 Mar 1784 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut - 23 Dec 1871) married Eunice Randell (28 July 1789 Lebanon, New London, Connecticut - 8 April 1871

Edited to add: FindAGrave reports Samuel's second wife is Sarah ... "Sally", who died in 1851.

Samuel's administrator reported a legacy to "Sally West Widow ... " image 485 of 1373.

Then yet another Connecticut probate file may be about this widow. See Sally West 1851 probate, case 2625, (Columbia [stamped Hebron], Andover Probate District) in Connecticut State Library, Probate Files Collection, early to 1880; digital images, FamilySearch, viewed as FSL film 1015145, digital collection (DGS) 007626351, images 461-469 of 1373; includes will. Her will is dated 21 October 1844, witnessed by Samuel West and Lucy West; proved 21 November, 1851. She makes bequests to:

  • niece Mary Jane Holbrook, wife of Nathan R. Holbrook
  • another niece, Ester Porter
  • another niece, Lovisa Wright, wife of Ashel Wright.

Sally appointed Samuel F. West as sole executor.

Administers accounting includes 12.00 expense for "procuring & setting grave stones."
