Biography

Born: Joseph West, son of Ebenezer & Waite (Carr) West and twin to John West, was born 22 Oct 1766, at Newport, Rhode Island.[1]

Died: Joseph died 21 August 1847, age 82 yrs. 10 months, in Minerva, Essex County, New York[2][1]

Military: Joseph West filed for a pension after his service in the revolution and from these documents came a lot of what we know of him. As a resident of Litchfield, Litchfield, Connecticut, he enlisted as a substitute for Noah Bishop, during May 1779. He served as a private in Captain Theodore Catlin's Company, Colonel Beebe's Connecticut Regiment of state troops or militia. He was discharged after two months in July 1779.[1]

He enlisted again in June 1780 as a private in Captain Quick's (?) Company, Colonel Samuel Canfield's Connecticut Regiment. He was discharged after three months at the end of his term in Sept 1780.[1]

His last enlistment was for nine months with the Continental Forces, Connecticut Line, as a private in Captain Judson's Company, Colonel Butler's Regiment. He was discharged Jan/Feb 1783.[1]

During these enlistments he was never in a battle. He was at Horse Neck in Connecticut; Danbury, Stamford, CosCob, Horse Neck all in Connecticut then to White Plains, New York; lastly at Highlands of New York, Danbury, near Kingsbury and West Point, New York.[1]

Residences: Born at Newport, Rhode Island. Enlisted at Litchfield, Connecticut. Shortly after the War he went to Vershire, Orange County Vermont , stayed about five years.[1] He was there for the 1790 Census. (2 males under 16, one male 16 and over, one female[3] He next went to Hartford, Washington County, New York until 1824, when he moved to Minerva, Essex Co, New York[1] He was dismissed from the Hartford Baptist Church 19 Jan 1824.[4]

Civil: In his civil life Joseph was a farmer and a justice of the peace.

Joseph West married twice:
He and Ruth Munson, daughter of John Munson of Wllingford, Connecticut were married about 1783. Their Children were:

Child: Huldah West[5] was born 24 Sept 1784[2]
Child: Ithamar West[5] was born 12 Sept 1786[2]
Child: John Munson West[5] was born 1 June 1789.[2]
Child: Lydia T. West[5] was born 1 Oct. 1791.[2]
Child: Joseph West[5] was born 21 Sept 1794[2]
Child: Calvin West[5] was born 29 Oct. 1796.[2]
Child: Spencer West was born 21 May 1799[2]
Child: Lyman West[5] was born 11 Aug 1805[2].

Joseph married second Sally Felch, November 1805 at Granville, Washington County, New York.[1] She died 3 February 1861. Age 82 yrs 10 mos.[2] Their children were.

Child: Chester F West was born 30 March 1807;[2] died 15 March 1852, age 44y 11m and a half.[2]
Child: Sydney C West was born 22 May 1811;[2] died 4 November 1750 age 39y 5m 13d[2]
Child: Samuel F. West was born 10 August 1816;[2] married Esther Julina Morse, age 19, 2 July 1854[2]
