There were 2 Joan West Whites in the same family. For convenience, let's call them English Joan and American Joan. This profile is for English Joan, the older of the two. English Joan was the aunt of American immigrant Joan (West) White.[1]
English Joan was baptized at Drayton, Somerset, England in 1578, the daughter of Nicholas West and his wife, Anne. English Joan married Robert White and died in England in 1631.
English Joan's brother Richard West married Magdaline/Maudlin Staple, alias Cooke. It was not unusual that Richard West and his wife would also name their daughter Joan (our American Joan).
Genealogists get confused because American Joan happened to marry John White, creating an aunt and niece both named Joan West White. John White and American Joan then moved to New England, where they began a White dynasty.
As with all genealogical work, our findings are subject to review and revision based on updated historical discovery and reasoning.
