Ephraim enlisted in the British Army on September 7, 1914. He was a Private in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry. But he had suffered from Rheumatic Fever and a variety of associated ailments and he appeared before the medical board on December 23, 1915 and was recommended for discharge from the service. He was discharged on January 8, 1916 with the notation "no longer physically fit for war service". Ephraim died less than three years later in the Spanish flu epidemic.
