Biography

James P West, the son of James West and Missouri Barnett, was living in the Canadian District of the Cherokee Nation on 28 August 1900 as shown on his U.S. Dawes Census Card. This Enrollment Card lists the family as:

  • James P West age 20, 1/8th Blood
  • William R West age 18, 1/8th Blood
  • John West age 13, 1/8th Blood
  • Jeff West age 11, 1/8th Blood

Their parents are listed as James K West, deceased and Missouri Williams a non-citizen of the tribe.[1]

In the matter of the application of Missouri Williams for the enrollment of herself and her children as Citizens of the Cherokee Nation, she states the following:

  • Her maiden name was Barnett
  • Her first husband was West
  • Her second husband was Blackwood
  • Her name is now Williams
  • She had five West children and one child by Blackwood
  • She married West in 1874 and he died in 1894
  • She says his name was James P West; however, the Dawes Census Card shows his name as James K West. Later in the application the Government refers to him as James P West.
  • Her child's name is Dytion Blackwood.

Her application was denied for herself and her son Dytion Blackwood. The West children were approved for enrollment.[2]

Mr. James West age 22 and Miss Minnie Cargill age 21, both of Texanna, the Northern District, Indian Territory, were married 11 February 1902.[3].

In the Allotment of the Lands of the Cherokee Nation, James P West age 22 and his brothers William R. age 20, John age 19 and Jeff West age 14 are living on the lands of the Polk West Estate, Texanna, Indian Territory. This record, dated 24 May 1905, indicates their mother is living near Roswell, New Mexico. Each of the brothers received 30 acres from this estate.[4],

On 11 October 1907, James P. West, as the father to Claud Otto West an enrolled minor citizen, applied for an allotment of land on behalf of his son. He was allotted 80 acres in Texanna, Indian Territory.[5]

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census of Beck Township, McIntosh County, Oklahoma shows the family as James West an Indian age 31 and his wife Minnie age 30 from Arkansas. She states four children have been born and two are still living. Those children are Claud O. age four and daughter Artie age two. His brother John age 23, and his wife Gertrude age 19, are living with the family.[6]

In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census of Beck Township, McIntosh County, Oklahoma, the family is listed as James West, a farmer, age 41born in Oklahoma and his wife Minnie age 40 from Missouri. Their children are Claud age 14, Roscoe age nine, Opal age seven and Houston age five all born in Oklahoma.[7]

The 1930 U.S. Federal Census, Beck Township, McIntosh County, Oklahoma lists the family as John W. West age 51and his wife Minnie age 50. Children listed are Opal age 17 and Huston age 14.[8]

In the 1940 U.S. Federal Census, Martin Township, Muskogee County, Oklahoma the family members are Jim W. West age 61 and his wife Minnie age 60 from Missouri. Others listed are Opal age 26 single, Huston West age 25 and his wife Lena age 27.[9]

As published in the Muskogee Daily Phoenix and Times-Democrat on 18 December 1940, Wednesday:

  • Jim West, 61, of Porum, died early Tuesday morning at his home...He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Minnie West; a daughter Opal West and three sons Claud West of Texanna, Roscoe West of Checotah, and Huston West of Amarillo, Texas...A brother Jeff of Bakersfield, Calif. and a half-brother of Bakersfield.[10]
