We have been unable to find out any information about Lizzie's parents. There is no birth certificate for Elizabeth and her twin brother, Joseph James Smith that we can find. Apparently even she did not know the names of her parents. If anyone can help us with ferreting them out, it would be appreciated. Here is the information we know about her:

• Their mother died during the birth of twins Elizabeth & Joseph (Note: she is NOT Mary Jane West, spinster, died 1868 age 27 of typhoid fever^[5] or Elizabeth Bruce West )
• Her father died when young. He was a storekeeper at Sunny Corner
• According to Phyllis Ward [Ward-14784], Elizabeth was fostered by Mrs Palmer, Durham St, Bathurst who had emigrated on the same ship as her mother. However her foster sister, Sophie's parents were Frederick West & Sophia Bradford. Sophia had emigrated to Australia on the Castilian arriving on 13 June 1858 as a single female along with her younger sister Emma. So Elizabeth's mother was one of the other young women on that ship.
• So West appears to be Elizabeth's adopted name, and it is highly likely that her parents surname was not West.
• Her step-sister Sophie West, born 1863^[6] married John H "Harry" Massey, engine driver at Goulburn in 1887^[7] and died on 25 Oct 1948 at Meriwether, Hamilton, NSW aged 85^[8][9]
• Her twin brother,Joseph James Smith, was fostered by Smith family, farmers out of Goulburn. He married Alma Schunemann in 1912 in Bellingen^[10] and died on 12 July 1931 at Coffs Harbour^[11]
