Research Needed

LNAB for proper project organization is unclear, pending identification of what Totten meant by "RCO." As it now stands, her first primary record is the marriage record that spells her surname as "Westerfeldt."

Biography

"Helena Westervelt" was baptised at Tappan, on (Sunday, under the old Julian calendar) February 2, 1729, the daughter of "Andries Westervelt and Dirckje Verdon," sponsored by "Jan Westerfield and Dirckgen, his wife." (An older sister Helena was baptised in 1724 but died young.) Helena was born four weeks prior in New Barbadoes Township (now named Hackensack). [1] [2]

"Helena Westerfeldt" married "Ian Oostrum" of Poughkeepsie, in Poughkeepsie, 27 Dec 1746. [2] [3] [4]

In his 1998 book, [5] D. G. Van Curen imputed one child, Mary, to this couple. His 2016 book (with a slightly different scope and format) is silent on this issue.

Bibliography

  • Totten, John Reynolds. “Verdon Family Notes.” New York Genealogical and Biographical Record LXIV, no. 2 (April 1933): 105–32. This source is not uniformly reliable. Macy wrote articles in 1992 and 2011, revising Totten's conclusions. However, the portions concerning Helena Westervelt were not revised by Macy.
  • Westervelt, Walter Tallman, compiler. Genealogy of the Westervelt Family. New York: Press of T. A. Wright, 1905. Indexed page images of 1987 reprint. Hathi Trust. https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/005774800 : 2018. This is a history of the [Van] Westervelt family in the New World. The preface states that the book was prepared for publication by the widow of Walter Tallman Westervelt from his notes. The European portions was done in the Netherlands by family members without additional checking. The American part was done by Westervelt but the widow did not have access to the original notes, so there are few citations to primary sources. Mistakes have been found in the book--mostly in confusing cousins with nearly identical names.
  • Van Curen, D. G. Descendants of Mathijs Jansen van Ceulen. RTF file on CD accompanying book, Van Keulen/Van Keuren, Van Kuren/Van Curen. Baltimore : Gateway Press, 1998. This is an extensive descendancy with informal citations to sources and brief proof arguments. The second book by Van Curen, listed below, can be regarded as an update of this book, albeit using a different format for presentation of the information.
