James Westmorland, supposed son of Thomas (Neville) Westmorland, is an ancestor of the Westmorland family in America who was probably created in an attemp to link the family to the heirs of the 1st creation of the Earl of Westmorland, Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmorland who was attainted by Parliament in 1571 and his title was forfeit.
James, like his supposed father Thomas, is pretty ubiquitous in other internet genealogy sites and does not seem like a modern internet fantasy. His father was not the son of Edmund Neville and Jane Smythe, and is most likely a fictional person.
One recent source is Westmoreland né Neville by Olin V. Mapes, which appears to have been sourced by the many myths of the early Westmorland family histories in America. Lucia Foster’s Westmoreland Ancestry 1980 Update actually tries to prove that the Westmorlands were not Nevilles, apparently without success as the legend persists.
Like his father, James is most likely a fictional person, what follows is the common legend
First recorded Westmoreland to arrive in North America Generation No. 6 James Westmoreland (Thomas Neville5, Edmund4, Richard3 Neville, William2, Richard1)
