Biography

Ellen M. is believed to have been born in Centerline, Michigan on 1 September 1880 to Mary Whalen[1].

In 1900 Ellen is living with her mother, Mary, and her four siblings in the home of her future husband, James C. Greiner[2] in Highland Park, Michigan. Her mother, Mary, is listed as James' housekeeper.

Ellen married James Claude Greiner in February 1906. It was no doubt an interesting courtship since they were already living in the same home.

In April 1910, James, Ellen, and their first child, Catherine Mary (5 months old), are living on their farm in Harrison Township, in Macomb County, Michigan[3].

Ellen and James would have two more daughters, Josephine A. (b. 1912) and Rosemary Anne (b. 1919).

In 1920, the family has moved a farm on Linden Road in Fenton Township, Genesee County. The census indicates they have four hired men residing on the farm[4].

In 1930, Catherine is no longer living at home, but Josephine and Rosemary still are. They are still on the same farm and have three hired hands and four borders (all under the age of 17)[5].

Sadly, Josephine passed away in early 1933.

In 1940, James, Ellen, and Rosemary are still on the same farm with four hired hands and three borders, again all minors[6].

Ellen passed away in 1956, six years after James.

Disclaimer:

I have not found a birth record for Ellen. There is some evidence she may have been born Margaret Ellen (vs. Ellen M.) and may have been born September 1st, 1879 (vs. 1880). There is evidence of a Margaret Ellen born on 1 September 1879 to a Michael and Mary Whalen in Warren, Michigan (also in Macomb County). They may be the same person. James R. Greiner
