Biography

This profile is part of the Whaley Name Study.

Elias Whaley/Wale was born on 22 Nov 1722 in Somerset County, Province of Maryland of Nathaniel Whaley and Mary Dale. He is named in father Nathaniel Wale's Somerset Will which notes wife Mary and 5 children: William, Charles, Nathaniel, Elias and Rachel; Codicil states birth dates and ages of children. [1]

Elias married Martha Dale abt 1750 in Worcester, Maryland. (Worcester County formed from Somerset in 1742.). Their last child, Thomas, was born a few months after his father Elias's death in 1794. Martha remarried after death of Elias to a Bishop. [2]

in 1799 Thomas Whaley of Worcester made a bond with Seth Whaley, whom I believe was his brother, to carry out the terms of an apprenticeship. [3]

Previous Note

  • The following information should be verified and citations added.

Will made by Elias Whaley on October 4, 1775. Estate inventoried on March 26, 1776. However, it was not administrated until June 29, 1789, thirteen years after his death. His wife had already remarried by this time,to a Mr. Bishop. At the time of inventory, Nathaniel Whaley and Charles Whaley, brothers of Elias. were listed as heirs. However, thirteen years later at the time of execution, we find heirs as Martha Bisop (sic) and next of kin, Seth and Esther Whaley, (son and daughter-in-law).

17 Sep 2019: Adams-16917 not checked; should be removed. [Thomas Whaley sources]. 2 Oct 2020: this profile had material all related to Elias's son, Thomas Whaley dating well after Elias's death (e.g., 1850 census record). It can be found in Thomas's profile and has been deleted from Elias's profile. A Hayes
