Sarah, daughter of Thomas Wheeden, was born 23 April 1666, in New Haven, Connecticut Colony.[1][2] New Haven Colony gave up it's autonomy and became part of the Connecticut Colony just a little over a year before Sarah's birth.
She married Samuel Elwell of Branford and settled there.[2] From his inventory, we can tell he was a farmer. They had a house, orchard, land, oxen, pigs, sheep, cows and implements to farm the land.
Sarah Elwell, widow, became a member of the First Church and Society of Branford, Connecticut, 7 Feb 1732/3.[3] This was the day of the ordination of the new minister of the Branford Church, Philomon Robbins.[4] Had Sarah heard him preach during the months before his ordination, and been moved to become a member? Or perhaps she had been waiting, since the last minister of Branford died in 1731.
Sarah died within a few years, before 3 Aug 1734, when son Samuel became administrator of her estate. Probate took place in Guilford, implying her death in that town.[5]
Children mentioned in her probate documents: Samuel Elwell of Fairfield, Ebenezer Elwell, Joseph Elwell, Robert Owen (son in law).[5]
People mentioned in the probate documents of her husband Samuel: Sarah widow, Mary, Ebenezer eldest son, Joseph, Hannah, Robert Owens. Son Samuel is not in the file.[6]
Children of Samuel and Sarah recorded in Branford:[7]
