Biography

This profile is part of the Wheeler Name Study.

John Wheeler was born about 1536, son of Henry Wheeler (Wheeler-1039). He was married about 1560 to Alice Unknown'[citation needed]

John Wheeler made his will on February 9, 1567 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and he died there on April 15. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter and St. Paul's in Cranfield on April 16.

Children

Children of John and Alice (Unknown) Wheeler (per his will):
  1. Thomas, b. after 1546 (under 21 in 1566/7)
  2. John, b. after 1547 (younger than Thomas)

Research Notes

I do not find any information on the origins of John Wheeler in The Fifty Great Migration Colonists. There are two mentions of a John Wheeler in his book. One is the son of George Wheeler, mentioned in his will dated 28 January 1684/6, who would be much too late to be this John. (Page 496.) The other is a John Wheeler of Marston Mortaine who made his will on 24 November 1500, which is too early to be this John. (Page 498.)
This John Wheeler appears to be completely unsourced apart from his will (assuming this will is for the correct John Wheeler). The will mentions only two underage sons - Thomas and John - and a wife Alice.
- Rorabacher-18

His wife wasn't Alice Sayre, daughter of William and Alice Sayre of Hinwick, Podington, Bedford. Their daughter Alice was named as Alice West, wife of Robert West, in their wills of 15 Feb 1563 and 20 Apr 1567 respectively and again as Alice West in the will of her uncle Thomas Sayre dated 30 May 1581.

She needs to be amended to Alice Unknown and the connections to the Sayres severed

John was born about 1533 at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of Henry Wheeler and his first, unknown, wife. About 1558, he married Alice Sayre in Bedfordshire, probably in Odell, her home town. They had two children, Thomas and John. John Wheeler made his will on February 5, 1567 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England and died in April. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter and St. Paul's in Cranfield on April 16. In the will, he named his wife and his two minor sons. This is the only evidence that the father of Thomas Wheeler was this John, except that Thomas named one of his sons John. In his will, John asked to be buried in the churchyard at Cranfield. That would be the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. Alice died within a day of John.

Where does the descriptor of 'of Towne End' source from? In sorting records for Thomas Wheeler of Blakehouse and his son Thomas Wheeler (the older) of Wharley, there exists one or maybe two other Thomas Wheelers in the parish records which co-exist with these men and one of the men that co-exists we are using the descriptor 'of Towne End'. I would expect the property at 'of towne end' to have passed down through a different line of Wheelers. The American immigrants have been verified to have been from the Wheelers of Wharley and Blakehouse / at Bournend. The is no question from the records that there is a Thomas 'of Towne End' and a coexisting Thomas of 'Wharley'. Also the Thomas Wheeler, the younger son of Thomas Wheeler (b.abt 1561) is too young to own property and be associated with that property.

Given naming practices and patterns, I think the ancestor next in line to Thomas Wheeler (b. abt 1561, ancestor to American Concord and Fairfield settlers) will be a Thomas. If it were a John, then it would be a first born birth we are missing before the birth of Thomas of 1591. If that John had died, there would have been a burial record before 1596. Also the Thomas of 1561 named another son Thomas.

Thank you for the Alice Sayre information, I did see her name passed on in secondary sources.

In my report, for now I am not going to add another generation to Thomas Wheeler (b.1561) or a mother's name, even though Alice fits well as a mother's name for this family. Its source appears to be this will and I'm uncertain that the will here (if associated with property of 'of Towne End' matches our Wheeler ancestors. See WikiTree profile individual 1048 for the co-existing Wheeler line.

Thank you to the wonderful wiketree members who have worked so diligently on this post for John Wheeler and that of his son John. They are my daughters 10 th and 11th great grandfathers. I have my late husband's DNA and hers and mine, but do not know how to use it. Would appreciate some help. Gillam-558

The Wheelers of Cranfield are being discussed in the following G2G feed

When will this profile be ready to merge with Wheeler-199? There are duplicate wives and children, but it looks as if the dup John Wheelers (this and -199) could be done so that descendant profiles could be merged.

Thank you.

Here are two more sources (and the sources listed therein) for your consideration:

I hope that one of the Profile Managers will change the parents of John. He is the son of Henry Wheeler (Wheeler-1039).

Is Priscilla a daughter of John Wheeler? If so, her birthyear is far too late (since he died in 1567).

I also mentioned in the biography that John is a son of Henry. However, since I am not one of the profile managers, I am unable to disconnect John Wheeler from Obadiah

posted by Kenneth Kinman
I would like to propose disconnecting John Wheeler from his supposed father Obadiah (who may not have even existed), and instead make John Wheeler the son of Henry Wheeler (Wheeler-1039), and Henry's first wife. The following would be a credible and recent source to cite:

Wheeler-3129 and Wheeler-199 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. His father seems to be Henry, not Obadiah (if that early Obadiah ever existed at all).

Then we can remove the four youngest children listed (all born well after John died).

Based on the source given in my previous comment (and here), I think Wheeler-3129 should be merged into this one, and that the father should be Henry (as in that profile), not Obadiah. I could find no evidence that an Obadiah (b. ca. 1506) even existed.

Looks like Obadiah might not be John's father, and profile Wheeler-3129 might be correct that John's father was Henry. This would make more sense if Obadiah really did die in 1536. Anyway, here's one source for John being son of Henry (rather than son of Obadiah):

Wheeler-3129 and Wheeler-199 are not ready to be merged because: Fathers do not match, more information is needed to determine if these are true matches and the identity of his father.
