Joseph Wheeler was a Soldier of the Revolution. He was one upon whom General Washington personally called when he wanted a brave and courageous man to undertake some perilous enterprise.
It is related that on one occasion, General Washington called upon him to pick off a British Officer who was spying on the camp. Not withstanding the great distance, Joseph Wheeler leveled his trusty rifle, fired, and laid the Britain low in the dust. Three days after this incident, Joseph Wheeler himself, was shot by the enemy. General Washington personally attended his burial.
