Obadiah Wheeler, son of John Wheeler (d. c. 1644) and Elizabeth ___ was baptized 10 Dec 1609 at Cranfield.[1]Obadiah Wheeler, was baptised at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England on 5 Dec 1609, the son of John Wheeler.[2]

Obadiah Wheeler, was the founder of a large and distinguished family. He was born in England in 1608 and settled in Concord Massachusetts in 1638. He was a farmer and died in Concord October 29, 1671. He married first Susannah ___ and the first six of his children were borne by her in Concord. He had a second wife whose name is not preserved, who was the mother of the last two children. (p. 90)

His children were:

  1. Joshua, born in England; married Elizabeth ___.
  2. John born January 29, 1640; died young.
  3. Ruth born April 23, 1642.
  4. Infant son born November 25, 1643; died November 29, 1643.
  5. Samuel born February 22, 1644-5; married Mary Perry.
  6. John born 1647.
  7. Susannah born March 16, 1649; married Shepley.
  8. Obadiah born 1651 or 1652; married Elizabeth White.
  9. Josiah died April 21 1676; killed by Indians at Sudbury Massachusetts.[3]

The year of his arrival in America is not known but it is very probable that he came with the Concord settlers from Odell, England.

  • Was one of the original proprietors of Concord.
  • Made freeman there in 1641.
  • Owned considerable property in and around Concord, and lived for a time at least in the East Quarter of the Town. (p. 350)

History of Concord:

The names of all the settlers who had reached the place of settlement by 1635 and 1636 is uncertain but a part of them are: Rev. Peter Bulkeley, Elder John Jones, Hayward Heald, Fletcher William, and Thomas Bateman, Hosmer, Potter, Ball, Rice ,Hartwell, Meriam, Judson, Griffin, George, Joseph and Obadiah Wheeler, and John Scotchford. (p. 65)

1654: Laying out lands; That some particular persons shall have some inlargement who are short in lands paying 12 d. per acre, as others have don, and 6d. per acre if the towne consent thereto: the persons are as follows: Georg Wheeler, 20 acres Obadiah Wheeler 20 acres, Michel Wood 12 acres, Thomas Daken 10 acres, Thomas Batman 15 acres, Bapties Smedly 14 acres. (p. 285)

Obadiah Wheeler Sr. died Oct. 27, 1671, aged 63 and his wife Susannah died 1650. (March 24, 1649)[6]

How do we know that the male baptized 5 dec 1609 in Cranfield is the same as the emigrant to Massachusetts?

Obadiah married Susannah on 20 Jan 1634 in Cranfield. Susannah b:16 Feb 1607 in Cranfield; d:24 Mar 1649 in Concord, MA.

Obadiah had a 2nd wife, Eliza Knight, married about 1650.
