According to Wheeler Family History (see sources below) John Wheeler came to America with Susannah Drummond's father: John or Johnathan Drummond, transported in 1659 by Richard Major, Sr. who recieved 350 acres in New Kent County, VA for paying transportation costs. Wheeler Family History identifies William Wheeler of Baltimore, MD as John Wheeler's son, but John and William Wheeler are found in New Kent County, VA in 1704 (45 years after John Wheeler arrived, according to English duplicates of Lost Virginia Records by Louis des Cognets. which shows in 1704 rent rolls: James City County: Jno. Drummond 700A Wm. Drummond: 150A New Kent County: John Wheeler 75A (quit rents y't hath not been p'd this year) Wm. Wheeler 150A Accomack County: Jno. Drummond 1550A (quit rents y't hath not been p'd this year) Rich'd Drummond: 600A Stephen Drummond: 300A
William Wheeler of Baltimore, MD is identified as the father of Richard Wheeler of VA in Wheeler Family History and in Baltimore Co. Maryland Families 1659-1759, by Robert W. Barnes, 1989, Genealogical Publishing Company.
The Drummond given name, used in subsequent generations seems to prove a link to William Wheeler marrying Suzanne Drummond; this is the only link between Anne Arrundale, MD and Richard Wheeler of Fairfax, VA. No other documents exist for this marriage other than documented books of family trees as far as this author knows.
In his will Richard Wheeler names Drummond Wheeler as his only son. Land records show that Richard Wheeler's land in Fairfax (present-day Arlington County) passed to Drummond when Richard's wife Rebecca Frizell Davis died. It was then sold by Drummond Wheeler in 1767.
VA personal property and land taxes provide info on Drummond Wheeler. Wheeler Family History contains primary information about him. Drawn from personal property and land tax rolls for Fairfax, Prince William, and Farquier Counties from 1782-1809; Fairfax searched through 1825; Fauquier to 1819; property tax records to 1831, Prince William County to 1812. Louden County from 1782 to 1789 and 1796 to 1803. All wheeler names searched and traced and only one Drummond Wheeler is listed in Fairfax and Prince William Counties listed 1782 and 1783 in Fairfax Co.
In 1784 Drummond Wheeler is listed in Prince William County but is taxed for land in Fairfax County. Then 2 Drummond Wheelers appear: one in Fairfax and one in Prince William Co. In 1789 Fairfax is listed for Drummond Wheeler's son, Jr. but could be Drummond Senior's property handled by an overseer or guardian. Or they could be unrelated Drummond Wheelers as in the Elder or the Younger, not necessarily father and son, though this would seem more unlikely that they be unrelated men in a very small colony bearing the same name, right?
The Wheeler Family History author, Leo, arrives at the conclusion Drummond Wheeler Sr. died in 1791 and his son Drummond Wheeler died in 1804.
Edward Wheeler, son of Drummond Wheeler, established by motion by Richard Wheeler in Fairfax Court 18 July, 1792: "Certifying that he is the eldest son of Drummond Wheeler now living and brother of Edward Wheeler, who is deseased." There is no record of Edward Wheeler, deseased. Siblings of Edward and Drummond at this time can be found in Virginia: Drummond, Jr. Nathan, Benjamin, and Thomas have all been deduced from legal, land, and property tax records based on time and space proximity to one another.
Most prior researchers assumed John Wheeler to son of Nathan Wheeler and he was not the administrator of Nathan's estate because of sickness. But, the 1810 Farquier Co. property tax shows Nathan Wheeler shows him living with two other white males identified as sons of Edward Wheeler. To that time, 1791-1796 Prince William Co. taxes and 179701809 Fauquier Co. taxes records listed Nathan as the only tithable white, except Fauquier Co. 1799 records where Nathan is listed with two other tithable whites and James Ferguson, who is thought to be a hired hand.
Nathan Wheeler disappears from Northern Virginia after 1810, he is presumed to have moved to Wilson County, TN. Persons and their ages identified Nathan's estate settlement records in Wison TN (including a John Wheeler) which closely match the 1810 census for Nathan Wheeler of Fairfax Co. VA. This is according to multiple researchers.
John Deskin Wheeler, son of John Wheeler, based on an affadavit made 5 Dec. 1851 in DeKalb Co. TN by Edward B. Wheeler and John D. Wheeler stating: "The heirs of John Wheeler are John D. Wheeler, Nathan Wheeler, Mary D. Wheeler, and Henry Wheeler." Reinforced by recollections of John Deskin Wheeler's descendents concerning his siblings and cousins which match other descendants of John Wheeler. (Info from Farris N. Wheeler's notes and research, no published copy exists.)
Wheeler Family History: TN State Library Reference CS71.W56 1962a. Results of research from 1909 to 1917 by Mary Wheeler Cooney and Margaret Wheeler Jones, daughters of John Gill Wheeler of Manor, TX. Published in 1962 by Edward Earle Wheeler of 130 Archimedes Dr. San Antonio, TX. Abstract Premise: Wheeler Family History includes info on Wheelers of Worcester County and Warwickshire England. Concludes children of Sir William Wheeler and Penelope Glynne, daughter of Sir Stephen Glynne of Wawarden, were those who came to America. (Unconfirmed)
Conclusions from the book: The Wheelers: A Northern Virginia, etc. after Richard Wheeler in the third generation of the book are inaccurate. This is in fact tracing the John Deskin Wheeler line, not Richard Wheelers. In the 1962 edition's contributors it states the following: Mrs Clyde W. (Fannie Lu Camp) Fischer, Palm Beach, FL. : National Historian of the Society, Daughters of the American Colonists identified as a decendant through Nimrod Bates Wheeler (a possible mistake as he was actually the son of Richard Wheeler, who was the son of Drummond Wheeler).
