Biography

Birth

Helen M. Wheeler was born on 4 October 1837 in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, New York, United States to Lewis J. Wheeler (1792-1887) and Mary Robinson (1792-1852).

Her mother died when she was 14 years old. Her father married again in 1855 to Anna M. Inman Shirline, a widow with 8 living children. By 1855 they all lived in a log house on 140 acres of pastures and wilderness. This newly combined family consisted of her mother, step-father, Lewis J. Wheeler, five sisters, and 3 step-brothers still at home.

  1. Martin William Wheeler was born on 30 September 1808 in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. He married Sarah E. Hamilton (1812-1886) in 1834. Martin died on 1 February 1874 in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.
  2. John G. Wheeler was born on 28 June 1811 in Delavan, Cattaraugus, New York, United States. John died some time after the 1865 New York State Census where he appeared as a married carpenter.
  3. Adeline Wheeler was born on 5 March 1815 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. She married Benjamin L. Johnson (1804-1866) in c. 1840. Adeline died after 1880 when she appeared on the 4 June United States Federal Census living with her daughter, Mary Townsend, in Carrollton, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.
  4. George L. Wheeler was born on 26 July 1817 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He married Sara Jane Boggs (1817-1892) c. 1841. George died on 23 December 1906 in Lodomillo, Clayton, Iowa, USA.
  5. William Henry Wheeler was born on 1 January 1819 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He married Rebecca Lindsay (1826-1907) on 4 July 1845. William died on 19 September 1913 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.
  6. Annis Wheeler was born on 3 April 1820 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. She married Nathan A. Boutelle (1818-1888) on 15 August 1841 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. Annis died on 27 June 1852 in Ayersville, Defiance, Ohio, United States.
  7. Charles M. Wheeler was born on 12 May 1821 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He doesn't appear to have ever married. Charles died after 16 February 1892 when he appeared on the New York State Census of that date living with his sister Helen who was married to Roswell Spalding.
  8. Mary Ann Wheeler was born in July 1824 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. She married Elen Northrup (1822-after 6 June 1900) in 1850. Mary died some time after 1900 when she and her husband appeared on the United States Federal Census in LeRay, Jefferson, New York.
  9. Ruben Wheeler was born on 31 January 1826 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He died c. 1839 as his age group does not show in the family 1840 United States Federal Census.
  10. Elizabeth Wheeler was born on 17 May 1828 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. She married Jacob Karne Myers (1820-1905) on 28 March 1849 in Clermont County, Ohio. Elizabeth died on 8 April 1886 in Ayersville, Defiance, Ohio, United States.
  11. Joseph A. Wheeler was born on 11 September 1832 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He married Eunice R. Shirline (1839-1925), his stepsister, on 16 September 1854 in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus, New York. Joseph died on 23 December 1913 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.
  12. Thaddeus Chad Wheeler was born on 13 September 1833 in Fort Edward, Washington, New York, United States. He married Betsey E. Shirline (about 1837-1904), his step-sister, in about 1859 in New York. Thaddeus died on 4 September 1869 in Allegany, Cattaraugus, New York, United States.

Marriage and Family

She married Roswell Spaulding (1827-1920) in about 1858 probably in Cattaraugus County, New York. This is a second marriage for him. The child Wesley is not Helen's biological son as he was born in about 1856. He was 4 on the 1860 United States Federal Census. He was not mentioned on the 1870 Census. On the 1900 Federal Census, Helen says she married Roswell in 1858.

Children of the Spalding-Wheeler Marriage

  1. Liza Estella Spaulding (c. 1859-bef July 1870).
  2. William Henry Spaulding (1864-1942). He married 1) Ada Wells (b. 1866) c. 1886 and 2) Alvira Ann Pierce (1862-1933) before 1920. Alvira had been previously married to Martin L. Bowen (1853-1916) c. 1880.

Death

The last record found for Helen was the 8 January 1920 United States Federal Census when she was 82 and a widow.
