Biography

Nathaniel Wheeler, son of Nathaniel Wheeler and Esther Botsford was born about 1677. He died March 13, 1761, and was buried in the Old Burial Ground, Newark, New Jersey.[1]

Nathaniel married (1) Mary (…), say 1699; he married (2) Jemima (…) at Newark, after 1721. The ancestry of both women is unknown (or not traced here).[1]

He removed to Morris Co., N. J., where he owned land which he willed to his son David. He was Overseer of Poor 1709; Surveyor of Highways 1719; Sheepmaster 1714; Fence Viewer 1705, 1733, 1740.

Nathaniel left a will dated 28 February 1754 at Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey, proved 28 Mar 1761, naming:[2]

His wife, Jemima
sons David & Nathaniel
daughters Sarah Ross & Johanna Foster
executors Nathaniel and John Ross (John died by 1761 when Nathaniel appeared as surviving Executor

Children

Probably with first wife, Mary:

  1. Nathaniel Wheeler born abt. 1700
  2. Sarah Wheeler born abt. 1700
  3. Johanna Wheeler born abt. 1700
  4. David Wheeler born abt.1705, died abt. Jul 1757

Research Notes

The Wheeler Family bungles Nathaniel's marriages. It does not mention the first wife, but assigns her death to Jemima. Mary is named in Condit's inscriptions of Newark and of course Jemima did not die in 1721, being hale and hearty when Nathaniel wrote his will in 1754.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Nathaniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Nathaniel:

I’ve discovered I’m not related to this Wheeler at all. I adopted this profile because it was abandoned and felt I may be able to contribute to it. I’m rescinding any regard I had for it and therefore abandoning it.

Before this merge gets approved (potentially in error), some degree of probitive investigation should be applied to discern the true ancestry of the person(s) who are the subject of these profiles. The daughter(s) Sarah Wheeler does not match up at all, and neither do the wives. Disparities in the geography, New Haven vs. Boston, do not lend comfort to any prospect of merging these profiles.
