Disputed Origins

Grace Wheeler is not the wife of Thomas Brooks. The only source found for a surname of "Wheeler" so far is a 1948 vanity publication of Dakin Genealogy which states, without source, that her name was Wheeler.[1] Clarence Torrey in "New England Marriages prior to 1700" then included this as one of his sources when listing the surname as "Wheeler" although in brackets and with a question mark meaning not from a marriage record and uncertain.[2][3]

An alternative wife for Thomas Brooks, Grace Cunliffe is supported by a "most probably" statement by John Threlfall which is hardly conclusive, but is at least supported by a baptism and a marriage to Thomas "Bruckes" in Manchester, Lancashire, England as listed on her profile.

There is also some confusion over whether Henry Brooks of Manchester, England and Woburn, Mass married a Wheeler which probably adds to the confusion of Thomas Brooks' wife. No evidence has been found to support such a marriage.

Biography

This profile was originally intended is to represent the wife of Thomas Brooks, early immigrant to New England. She is thought by some experts to be Grace Cundclif (see her profile for additional sources, as well as the Disputed Origins section above).

Birth & Baptism

This profile was created through a gedcom import, never had any valid sources, and the linked ancestry trees do not exist anymore. Birth dates of 1592, 1594 and 1609 were all stated, some in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, (an area from which many Wheelers came); an unsourced marriage date of 1621 was also shown in the profile.

Death & Estate

Grace Brooks (not the same as this person) passed away on 2 May 1664 in Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[4] (An original town record image at familysearch transcribes the date as 2 May, it could easily be read as 20 May.)

Note that there is a FindAGrave profile for the wife of Thomas Brooks which lists her as "Wheeler", again without sources for any facts (see "See Also" section).

Wheeler-13967 and Wheeler-1023 appear to represent the same person because: Same death date, same spouse Thomas Brooks.

Grace Wheeler was not the correct name of the wife of Thomas Brooks; however due to the vast number of trees on the internet showing her name, as well as some (now disproven) sources, we will retain a Grace Wheeler Brooks as a profile, marked Uncertain Existence, with links to Thomas Brooks' much-better-documented wife.

Please merge, retaining all the bio material from -1023.

There are three profiles active which all seem to point to the same person, understanding of course the many opinions of the Henry vs. Thomas debate. They are:

Wheeler-1023 Wheeler-2198 Wheeler-13967 At a minimum I suggest they be flagged with a note, but I respectfully suggest they may well be the same individual.

Hi Robin,

She is as intended. Sorry for not adding more references sooner.

All sources indicate that the first wife, and mother of Henry's children is UNKNOWN. On Ancestry.com this woman is confused with Grace Wheeler that married Thomas Brooks. There are many, many profiles that have this error.

Hi Sunny,

After some research on this, I think this is who this profile was supposed to be.... https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/32743931

I found a note "somewhere" that indicated that she has been confused many times with the unnamed first wife of Henry Brooks.

Unk-2498 and Wheeler-13967 appear to represent the same person because: same husband, similar dates

Are there any sources for this profile, the two listed are too vague to be of any help?

In the Biography notes Why do the two children John Wheeler and Hannah carry the Wheeler surname? Shouldn't they have the Brooks surname? Or am I misunderstanding the note? I wouldn't even try to add corrections to this profile or it would be a confused mess. Check out Wiki Tree-178 or Wiki Tree-1955. Good luck.

Hi Deborah I wanted to let you know that Grace Wheeler Brooks was not the mother of my ancestor Hannah (Brooks) Fox. She was the daughter of Henry Brooks of Woburn by his (Unknown) first wife. It was Captain Thomas Brooks (who some claim was a cousin to Henry) who married Grace Wheeler. This has been a very much confused history between the descendants of Henry & Thomas Brooks. In Henry Brook's Will he names his daughter as "Lestor" which implies he was upset with her over the notes he held on Hannah and which was to be her portion of his estate. Hannah (Brooks) Fox had left Concord and had taken her children to New London, Connecticut where she married her second husband, Andrew Lester/Lestor. To have called his daughter just "Lestor" (her 2nd. marriage surname) shows some father/daughter problem I think.
