Born in Pittsburgh, PA, his family celebrated Samuel's birthday as 13 Feb 1854, the date that is listed in his obituary in The Walworth Times. His mother was Mary (Stroup Wheeler) Wambold. Father: John Wheeler (according to record of marriage of Samuel to Sarah Anne (Bailey) Wheeler.) According to notes written by his youngest daughter, Florence, Samuel's mother never knew her actual age nor the ages of her two children. Each time she was asked, she gave different answers. This explains the variety of implied birth years in federal census listings. Apparently the month and day were known, but not the year. Her notes says the family used 1853 as consensus birth year, but his obituary says 1854.
His father must have died at about the time of his birth. His mother married August Wambold in about 1954 according to the 1900 federal census and August Wambold's obituary, so Samuel must have been an infant or possibly unborn at time of his father's death.
He moved with mother, sister and stepfather to Wisconsin prior to 1870 (federal census). Married Sarah Anne (Annie) Bailey 26 Jul 1875 in Burlington, WI. They had six children; five lived to adulthood. Samuel died in February, 1922. A brief article published 9 Feb 1922 in the "Lake Geneva Regional News" mentioned funeral held at home of daughter, Mrs. Floyd Cunningham. The full obituary published 9 Feb 1922 in "The Walworth Times" provided more information about his life and family.
