Biography

This profile is part of the Wheeler Name Study.

Hiltje was baptized on 17 August 1740 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, New York, recorded as the child of Samuel and Margrieta Wielar[1] (Samuel Wheeler and his wife, born Margrieta van Woerd).

Later in life, possibly after settling in an English-speaking area, she was known as Altie. As for her last name, her father's family name appears to have been the English name Wheeler, which was spelled in diverse ways in Dutch records in New York. On his Wheeler Family Genealogy web page, Jeffrey C. Hause asserts that whenever original signatures are obtainable, the name is spelled "Wheeler".[2]

She married William Fitch on October 9, 1760.[3] In her father's will, written on 11 March 1771 at Kinderhook, New York, she is mentioned as his daughter Hillitie, the wife of William Fitch. Also mentioned were two of her daughters, identified as the testator's granddaughters Margaret and Abigail, daughters of William Fitch, who were not yet 21 years old.[4] He was a native of Lebanon, Connecticut.

Hiltje and her husband William Fitch lived for a time in Kinderhook, New York, where baptisms of some of their children were recorded. They removed to Vermont at a date to be determined. Her husband, Captain William Fitch, died at Pawlet, Vermont, on 30 April 1785, aged 48 years, 9 months, and 12 days.[3][5]

After William's death, his widow Mrs. Altie Fitch married Captain Elisha Clark on 18 February 1788.[3] Elisha Clark died about six months later.

Altie died April 26, 1805 in Pittstown, New York,[3] and is buried in Richmond Center Cemetery, Richmond, New York.[6]

Wheeler-12563 and Wheeler-6925 appear to represent the same person because: It is apparent to me that these are the same person. Altje is not a variant form of Hiltje -- these are two distinct Dutch names, but it is apparent that she was called Altje at some point in her life. Let's merge them.

Hello,

I am a member of the data doctor team. This person is the same person as Hiltje Elsia (Wheeler) Clark (abt.1740-1805) The name Altjie is a variation of Hiltje. If you study the baptism records of her children, you can see many versons of the spelling. Also, her father had a will and mentions his two daughters. This profile needs to be merged as well. Best, Linda
