William Kingsley Wheeler ("Willie") was born on August 15, 1873,[1] in Iowa. He was married in about 1897 to Inez M. Roper.[2] In 1900, the couple, along with two of their children--Bessie and Linden--are living with his parents in Mendocino, Sonoma, California.[3] By 1910, the couple and all four of their children, including Elsie and Clelia, are settled in Arena, Mendocino, California, on Light House Road, along with a hired man named Thomas Raxworthy.[4]
At the time of the World War I draft in 1918, he was living on Route One in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz California, where he was working as a farmer. The registrar reports that he has a bad leg, and that he is of tall height and medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. He lists his nearest relative as Dr. Ira A. Wheeler, so it is probable he and his wife are separated at the time, though no other supporting documentation has been found to suggest this.[1] They do not appear on future records together, and he died in 1932.[2]
