Biography

Jonathan was born in 18 Sep 1727 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. He was the son of Gershom Wheelock and Abigail Flagg. [1] [2]

Jonathan married Anna Drury 20 Jun 1753 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.[3] Jonathan and Anna had the following children:

  1. Jonathan b 25 Feb 1754
  2. Anna b 23 Mar 1756
  3. Zeruiah (Zerviah) b 12 Feb 1758
  4. Ebenezer b 4 Jun 1760
  5. Jotham b 26 Aug 1763
  6. Joseph Drury b 3 Nov 1770
  7. John Gleason b 10 Feb 1774

Jonathan passed away 21 October 1798 in Vermont. [4][5]

The following is transcribed by Ed Burke from photo copies of research either done by or on behalf of Charles Alfred Cunningham proving Revolutionary War ancestry:

Johnathan Wheelock was the son of Capt. Gershom Wheelock, (Colonial Wars) and Abigail Flagg, his wife, born in Shrewsbury Mass., Sept 18, 1727. On June 20 1753 he married Anna, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Flagg) Drury of Shrewsbury. He removed in 1775 to Petersboro, N. H.

He is stated to be one of the"Sargents in the Military" in 1776. He was a member of the Town Committee of Safety in 1777. In June 29th he enlisted for the first time and was a member of Capt. Robbe's Company which answered the Ticonderoga Alarm in 1777. He was discharged from this service (July 3rd) of five days and was paid 1# 15s 10d.

In 1789, Jonathan and family removed to Cavendish, Vermont. [6] His farmhouse is supposedly still standing, and is believed to be haunted.

Jonathan died 21 October 1798 in Cavendish, Vermont. His last will and testament was written 16 December 1797 and probated 27 November 1798. Transcription (Note: the thirty dollars to Jonathan Wheelock, may be a transcription/recording error mistaking Jotham, and Jonathan. Jotham/Jonathan are often confused. Being consistent with the birth order, after Ebenezer would be the expected place for the bequest to Jotham.]
