In 1761, in Mendon Massachusetts, the following children of Benjamin and Hannah Wheelock all died in quick succession[2]:
Israel, born in 1760 and died on 24 Sep 1761.
Anna, born in 1756 and died on 30 Sep 1761.
Jacob, born in 1758 and died on 11 Oct 1761.
Deborah, born in 1754 and died on 14 Oct 1761.
Such a rapid succession of deaths of children in one family, all within weeks of each other but not all on the same day, suggest an illness, such as influenza or smallpox, hitting the family.
