Biography

Uncertain Parents

There is no direct evidence that Abiah/Abial, wife of Benjamin Albee was a Wheelock. Both Clarence Torrey in New England Marriages prior to 1700[1] and Roberts in Ancestors of American Presidents[2] only give a first name with no additional information. The marriage seems to have been inferred by the birth records of the children. There is disagreement among family researchers whether Abial, the wife of Benjamin Albee is Abiel Wheelock. There is a marriage of Abiah Wheelock to Joseph Ward 5 Jun 1700 in Marlborough, Massachusetts.[3] As the two marriages are contemporaneous, its clear that there are different Abials. However, there is no direct evidence confirming that Abiah (Wheelock) Ward was the daughter of Benjamin Wheelock and Elizabethe Bullen. Evidence pointing to their daughter marrying Benjamin Albee: Benjamin lived next to Abiel's brother Obadiah; one of their children was named Obadiah; and they had a great-great-grandchild named Obadiah Wheelock Albee. [For more explanation see, Wheelock Genealogy website.

Maternal descendants of Abiel, wife of Benjamin Albee, and Elizabeth Bullen who would be willing to donate maternal DNA, could help resolve this question. (If you know of maternal descendants, please contact M Cole).

Research Notes

Some sources list her date of death as 30 Jun 1717. This is the same date as the death of Joseph Ward, the other possible husband of Abiel Wheelock. Since several of Abiel's children were born after this date, it is assumed that Joseph's date of death was accidentally transferred to Abiel, unless additional evidence is found.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Abiel by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Abiel:

Also, I think the death date is incorrect. I was reviewing database errors for Wheelock, and 3 children were born after her death date. It looks like the death date was taken from Joseph Ward, (Abiel Wheelock's husband). Looks like some mistakes in an online tree has led to this error being repeated (even on an unsourced Findagrave memorial).

I'm following up on Halsey's comment. There additional information on the evidence regarding who Abiel Wheelock (d/o Obidah and Elizabeth married:

Roberts, as noted, doesn't give Abial's maiden name. Neither does Torrey (page 7: "Albe, Benjamin and Abial ___?___; b(efore) 1694; Mendon"), probably Roberts' source. So there seems to be no proof that benjamin Albee's wife Abial is Abial Wheelock.

And Abiel Wheelock was married to Joseph Ward in Marlborough in 1700, with a marriage record that clearly gives her maiden name, and had seven children with him from 1701-1716. So, it seems that this woman is not a Wheelock, should be detached from the Wheelocks, and this profile's LNAB should be renamed from Wheelock-100 to Unknown-xxx.
