Biography

1776 Project
Thomas Whitaker served with 4th Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.

Thomas was born on 29 May 1731 at St Maryannes Parish, Cecil, Maryland.[1][2]

Thomas Whitaker was a Soldier in the War for Independence. He enlisted in Capt. James Gibson's company, 4th Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, in the year 1777, of which James Wilson was Colonel. [5] Some time prior to 1777, they had lived at or near Hagerstown, Md. About 1782 or 1783, Thomas Whitaker located at or near Burgetstown, Washington County, Penn., where they resided for a period of perhaps twenty years.

His children were as follows:

  2. Mary, born 1765, married Mr. Hull
  3. Elizabeth, born 1767, married Mr. Chamberlain
  4. Sarah, born, 1768, married Nicholas Brown
  5. Rachel, born 1769, married Solomon Perrin
  6. Eli, born 1770, married Mary Cherry
  7. Catherine, born 1772, married James Comly
  8. Dacon, born 1775, married Rachel Rogers
  9. Esther, born 1777, married William Murphy

About the year 1802 the families of James Holmes, Eli Whitaker, William Murphy, Sol. Perrin, Chamberlain and Hull . . . moved near Millersport, Ohio. Chamberlain, Hull and Sol Perrin soon after migrated farther west, and we know nothing of them further. The others located on the south side of Buckeye Lake, east of Millersport in Fairfield County, Ohio. About the year 1814, Nicholas Brown moved to this locality from Kentucky.

Now for the information of those who care to know, I will give the names of those families, all of whom were cousins.

Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. White. Mrs. White and husband resided at Gettysburg, Penn., during that battle, July 1 to 3, 1863.

Dacon Whitaker and Rachel Roger Whitaker's children were:

Nicholas and Sarah Whitaker Brown's children were:

These are the names and dates as recorded in the family Bible of Nicholas and Sarah Brown, and completes the list of the Whitakers who settled about Buckeye Lake from 1802 to 1814.[6]

The 1782 or 1783 dates refer to Thomas being located at or near Burgetstown, Washington County, PA. rather than Hagerstown. It looks okay to me. Perhaps the language is unclear somehow?

I just checked this page out because I added me ancestor to the 4th Battalion link, so far our ancestors are the only 2 there. Based on the information you provided in the Biography I think the dates for Hagerstown, Md. should be 1772 0r 73 not 1782 or 83.
