Research Notes

Rhon's research has shown that her great grandfather, Canut LeBlanc has also been recorded as Kenneth White in different records(see sources below). In Canut's generation, the name change from LeBlanc to White became permanent. Anthony White son of Kenneth answered to Antoine and was bilingual. His first language was French. For many years in Nfld, children were not allowed to speak French in school or elsewhere and there was a stigma attached to being French, and more so if identified as Mi'kmaq. Many families lost the languages of their ancestors. All generations from Anthony White onward carry the surname White and few speak French or Mi'kmaq today. We are working to restore our language and our heritage. Many of us have our status.
