Biography

Murray County Herald

Charles Wesley White was born on April 11, 1852 near Peoria, Ill and therefore at the time of his death was 89 years, one month and seven days.

At the tender age of two years he was left fatherless when his parent was killed while prospecting for gold with other miners. Despite this handicap, however, he grew to manhood at the place of his birth and on September 25, 1874 was united in marriage to Mary E. Huffman, of Kewanee, Ill.

The happy couple lived near Kewanee until the spring of 1888, when, with their young and growing family, they came to Minnesota, settling near Woodstock, in Murray County.

The aged wife, with whom he had spent 61 years of his life, preceded him in death succumbing on May 17, 1935. Remaining to mourn his loss are three daughters, Mrs. Jennie Holden, of Backus, Minnesota, Mrs. Lottie Deneault, of Walhalla, North Dakota, and Mrs. Alice Schneider, of this city; and five sons, Harvey of Backus, Minnesota, and George, Erwin, Guy, and Charles Jr. of this community. One daughter Hattie Underwood passed away in 1928. Pneumonia being accountable for his passing.

The deceased was one of those vigorous pioneers who knew the trial and vicissitudes of early days, but who met each problem as it confronted him. He never wavered in his faith, and though he suffered the loss of crops by grasshoppers and elements he remain steadfast in his belief that this was “God’s country”. Bitterness was unknown to him and he loved mankind with a trusting faith.
