Biography

1850 Census Matilda (born 1842) is listed in the home of Mary S White[1]

Disputed information on parents The Edmund West Collection (Ancestry.com subscription needed) shows Martin V White and Anna Burden as her parents. There is also a M White (born 1845) in the household of M White (born 1803) and A White (born 1814), ten years after Anna Burden[2] There may be confusion with Matilda White (born 1845), who married Barrett Smith[3]

1860 Census has William and Matilda living with his mother his brother, Franklin and younger sister, Sarah[4]

1870 Census lists William's mother, Susan (b. 1804) in the household and the following children[5]

  1. Archer F Smith
  2. Louisana E Smith
  3. Mary M Smith
  4. Thomas A Smith

1880 Census lists the following children

  1. Archie born 1861
  2. Louisiana born 1864
  3. Mary born 1867
  4. William born 1878[6]

The following children are also on the census record when you look at the image, but were not translated onto the digital record

  1. Thomas E 1869
  2. Sarah LL 1872
  3. Emma 1874
  4. Susan M 1876

And a Susan Smith born 1804 which must have been William's mother.
