William W White was born in 1829 on his parents' farm near Hatley, Monroe County, Mississippi, USA. He was the son of William W. White, Sr., b: ca. 1814 in Roane County, Tennessee, and his wife, Eveline Prewett, b: ca. 1810 in Maury County, Tennessee. [1]
Unfortunately, William White's father passed away when William was only about 1 year old. His mother took her infant son back to her parents' home in Maury County, Tennessee, after her husband's untimely death. There, she met and married John C Cherry in 1830. They had a son, Newell Cherry, b: 1832 in Maury, Tennessee. He was William's half brother.
The family returned to Eveline's farm in Monroe County, Mississippi. John C. Cherry died there in 1834. Eveline remarried a 2nd time to a local widower, George Washington Coopman, who had 3 children of his own.
On the 1850 US Census, William W. White, age 21, and Newell C. Cherry, age 17, shown living in Monroe County, Mississippi, in the home of G. W. and Evelina Coopwood, along with George's 3 children: John Coopwood, 22; Mary Coopwood, 19; and Sarah Coopwood, 17 years old. Both George W. Coopwood and Newell C. Cherry were recorded as "Farmers" while John Coopwood and William White were "Students".[2]
