Historical Note

William White, who was born on 21 Jan 1791, could not have been born in Tioga Center, Tioga Co., NY as that county did not exist at that time. Tioga County was formed from Montgomery County on 16 Feb 1791, 26 days after his birth. The village of Tioga Center is in the current Town of Tioga in Tioga County; the Town of Tioga was formed from the Town of Union in Broome County on 14 Mar 1800. Broome County had been taken off from Tioga County in 1806 and when the Town of Tioga was taken off the Town of Union it was moved back into Tioga County. [1] Thus the correct birth place should read "Tioga Center, Montgomery County, New York" but as the general population would not know the above stated facts, it might be best to leave it referenced to its current location in Tioga County. [Montgomery County is considered the "mother" of fourteen counties as it at one time included a large portion of what became New York State west of Albany. Likewise, Onondaga County, that had been taken from Mongomery County, had lands added to it by purchase from native tribes, that then became six new counties.]
