Biography

Sarah Slater was born about 1760, the daughter of Thomas Slater and Eleanor Eden Slater.[1] She was married to Israel White in 1784 in Greene County, Pennsylvania.

The following story is told about their wedding ceremony:

"During an alarm caused by the Indians in the year 1784, many of the settlers had fled to Fort Jackson for safety, including Israel White, whose task it was, to blow the large conch shell as an alarm to the ones near enough to hear it, warning them to come to the Fort. Thomas Slater's family, who lived close by the Fort was among those who sought safety on this occasion, and his daughter, Sarah, decided there could be no more fitting time for a wedding, so she and Israel White were married on this auspicious occasion."[2]

After the death of Israel on January 3, 1816, Sarah married John Shriver. Her daughter Rachel was later to marry one of her step brothers, Henry Shriver, the son of John Shriver and his first wife Elees "Alice" Richards.

John Shriver died on May 3, 1831 in Greene county, Pennsylvania. On May 7, 1831 letters of administration for the estate of John Shriver decd were granted to his son, Henry Shriver, and son-in-law, Mark Gordon. The bond was filed on June 6, 1831, and his widow, Sarah, filed her renunciation the same date.[3]

Sarah died on August 1, 1854 and is buried in the White Cemetery in Whitely Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. A memorial can be found on Find A Grave.
