Biography

Name

Name: Martha White

Birth

Born: About 1575.
Estimate based on marriage in 1597 and having children up until 1614.

Marriage and Children

Married: 1st -Rev. William Cooke on 27 April 1597 at Stockton, Wiltshire, England.
"Guilielmus Cooke cler. et Martha White filia Joh'is White de Stanton St. Joh'is i com. Oxon solemn m'ronio coniucti sunt 27 April [1597]." [1]
Married: 2nd - Unknown Moore. The surname of her second husband was Moore whom she married prior to 7th Nov 1629 as she is named as Martha Moore under the will of her brother Stephen White in 1629. I have not however managed to locate a marriage record. She is also a beneficiary under the will of her sister Mary Terry in 1637/8 and she was still alive in 1648 as she is also referred to as Martha Moore in John White's Will. [2] [3]
Children of Rev. William Cooke and Martha White: [4]
  1. Nathaniel Cooke. Born say 1601, baptism not found but likely at Crediton, Devon, England. [5] Buried 20 Apr 1603 at Crediton, Devon, England.
  2. Elizabeth Cooke, born say 1602, probably at Crediton, Devon, England. [5] Married Rev. William Walton Marriage on 10 Apr 1627 at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester, England.
  3. Samuel Cooke, baptized on 13 Jan 1604/5 at Crediton, Devon, England. Not named in father's will and probably died young.
  4. Susannah Cooke, baptized on 20 Jan 1606 at Crediton. Died after 1637 when she named in the will of her aunt, Mary Terry. Unmarried at the time.
  5. Nathaniel Cooke, baptized on 18 Jun 1609 at Crediton. Died after 1637 when she named in the will of his aunt, Mary Terry. Possibly the Nathaniel Cooke named rector of Wootton Fitzpaine, Devon on 11 November 1637.
  6. Mary Cooke, probably the unnamed daughter baptized on July 1611 at Crediton. Died after 1637 when she named in the will of her aunt, Mary Terry. Unmarried at the time.
  7. Martha Cooke, baptized on 7 Feb 1614 at Crediton. Named in the will of her father in 1615, but not in the will of her aunt Mary Terry in 1637.

Death

Died: After 1648.
Named in the will of Rev. John White in 1648. [2] [6]

Notes

The will of her 1st husband William Cooke, which is dated 7th Feb 1614 was proved on 26th June 1615, makes a number of very clear statements leaving no doubts about relationships. First it identifies him as "William Cooke of Credyton in the Countie of Devon Pastor there and Preacher of the word of God". This is confirmed by the 'Clergy of the Church of England database' which shows that he was appointed vicar at Crediton on 4th Oct 1595 and confirmed perpetual vicar on 5th March 1596. Secondly he refers to his "well beloved wyfe Martha Cooke" whom he appoints as sole executrix. Thirdly he appoints "my brother-in-law Mr John White preacher of Gods word at Dorchester" as one of the overseers of his will. This all sits well with his university record at Magdalen College Oxford which shows that he was awarded his BA degree on 3rd Nov 1582 and his MA degree on 22nd June 1587. More importantly it also states that he was Licenced to preach on 10th Feb 1595/6 which means he joined the church and was Licenced immediately before he was confirmed in the appointment as perpetual vicar at Crediton. Unfortunately it does not state when he matriculated but this would normally be 3 or 4 years prior to his BA degree and the average age of candidates for university was usually between 15 and 18 years old so I have estimated his birth date to be circa 1561/4. After the death of her 1st husband Martha Cooke came to Dorchester to live with her children under the protection of John White.
Some family connections:
  • Mother of the Great Migration immigrant Elizabeth (Cooke) Walton.
  • Son-in-law was Rev. William Walton the first minister of Marblehead, Mass.
  • Sister of Rev. John White, the"Patriarch of Dorchester."
  • Sister of Mary (White) Terry. Her husband was Rev. Stephen Terry. She was the aunt of Great Migration immigrant Stephen Terry. [7]
