Biography

Lucy White was born in Windsor, Connecticut, on June 16, 1715, the daughter of Captain Daniel White and his third wife, Elizabeth Bliss. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

She married first, Joseph French of Norwich and Coventry, Connecticut. They had four children. In August of 1740, an epidemic[6] ravaged her family. Her husband Joseph died on August 11, 1740, at the age of 30 years and 1 day. All four of their children also perished within ten days of each other: [2] [3] [5]

  1. Daniel, born July 21, 1731; died August 7, 1740.[3][7]
  2. Lucy, born ___; died August 12, 1740.[3][8]
  3. Ezekiel, born June 7, 1736; died August 10, 1740.[3][9][10]
  4. Tryphena, born May 30, 1739; died August 2, 1740.[3][11]

She married second, Josiah Walcott of Coventry, Connecticut, on April 23, 1741. They had eleven children: [2] [3] [4] [5]

  1. Lucy, born in Coventry, January 19, 1741/2.[3][4][12]
  2. Anna, born March 19, 1744; died March 26, 1744.[3][4]
  3. Anna, 2nd, born in Coventry, April 29, 1745; died June 18, 1745.[3][13]
  4. Theodora, born in Coventry, November 4, 1746;[3][4][14] married November 17, 1768, Michael Baldwin. (The birth record says: "Theodore," a male, but Chandler Wolcott claims it should be "Theodora" and female. This is likely correct since she is recorded as "Theadore" on a birth record as the mother of her son Michael).[15]
  5. Anna, 3rd, aka Hanna, born in Coventry, January 15, 1748/9;[3][4][16] married Jedediah Pratt, of Deep River.[17]
  6. Desire, born January 15, 1751; married Robert Lay, of Westbrook.[4][18]
  7. Sarah, born March 26, 1752/3; adopted by Rev. John Devotion; married Col. Asa Lay, of Westbrook.[4][19]
  8. Josiah, born May 17, 1753.[4]
  9. Silas, born August 4, 1755. (disproven as child of Lucy and Josiah through DNA testing)[4]
  10. Paul, born 1757. (disproven as child of Lucy and Josiah through DNA testing)[4]
  11. Elisha, born August 1758, died early.[4]

In about 1750, the family moved to Saybrook, Connecticut, and lived there for a few years. [3] [4]

Mrs. Lucy (White) (French) Wolcott died of smallpox in Saybrook, Connecticut, on November 29, 1760, at the age of 45. Her widowed husband, Josiah, subsequently moved to New Jersey, married Phebe ____, and had three more children. He died in Newark, New Jersey, on October 24, 1784. [4] [5] [20]

** note - "In 1912 a revised genealogy called the "Wolcott genealogy : the family of Henry Wolcott, one of the first settlers of Windsor, Connecticut", was compiled by George Chandler Wolcott, and published by the Wolcott Society. It included female lines, and Wolcotts and Walcott families not descended from Henry. A 1950 revision, also called "Wolcott Genealogy", was compiled for the Wolcott Society by A. Boehmer Rudd. Another revison called "Wolcott Family in America, 1578-1986" was compiled by Wolcott Society Registrar, Robert Charles Griffen, and Mitchell Alegre in 1986. These first four books are no longer available. A new 700 page genealogy was published by the Wolcott Society in 2002. It was compiled by Society Registrar, John B. Wolcott, and Assistant Registrar and Database Manager, Charles V. Waid. Because of the increased volume of data now in the Society’s records, the new book only covers the first seven generations of American Wolcotts, Walcotts and Wilcotts." Wolcott Family Society Website
