Biography

Sarah White was born in Marshfield, then part of Plymouth Colony, Oct 1663, daughter of Peregrine and Sarah (Bassett) White.[1][2]

Sarah married at Scituate, Jan 1688/9, Thomas Young.[3][1] Thomas was born in Scituate, 5 Nov 1663, son of George and Hannah (Pinson) Young. He died 25 Dec 1732 in Scituate.[1]

Administration of Thomas' estate was granted to his sons, George and Thomas Young, both of Scituate on 19 Mar 1732. Joseph Young and Joshua Young signed for their share of their father's estate 23 Jan 1737.[1] This number of sons agrees with Sarah's obituary published in the Boston Newsletter.

The death of Sarah (White) Young was reported in "The Boston Weekly News-Letter" of Friday, August 29, 1755:

"Saturday August 9th died at Scituate, in the 92d Year of her Age, Mrs. Sarah Young, the virtuous Widow of Mr. Thomas Young, and eldest Daughter of That Mr. Peregine White of Marshfield, who was the First Born English Child in New-England: Being Son of William and Susannah White, born on board the Ship in Cape-Cod Harbour, in the latter Part of Nov. 1620, in which Governor Carver and the Rest of our Plimouth Planters came to New-England, before the Ship left said Harbour and set sail for said Plimouth. Said Peregrine White liv'd in great Health and Vigour to the 84th Year of his Age, when a Fever carried Him off on July 22. 1704 as our News-Letter soon after inform'd the Publick: And this his Eldest Daughter was Born at Marshfield in Oct 1663, enjoy'd her Senses and Health in good measure, till towards her End, and left four Sons surviving. Two observable Instances of the Long Lives of the very first and second Race of Children born in this happy Country."[4][2]

  • Sinnett, Rev. Charles Nelson. Walter Merryman of Harpsell, Maine and His Descendants, is in error when he states that he is a descendant of Mayflower passenger William White through John Bailey and Sarah White, daughter of Peregrine White. The stated Sarah White that married John Bailey was the daughter of Gawen and Elizabeth (Ward) White of Scituate, MA. She married John Bailey on January 25, 1672/3.
